The Carteret County Coast Guard came into being on December 1, 1885. As New Jersey’s first organized coast guard unit, the Carteret County Coast Guard had a very brief history. On July 15, 1886, the Commandant of the Coast Guards in Atlantic City appointed Captain Augustus J. Crowley as its first captain and commandant. The primary purpose of the Carteret County Coast Guard was to provide law enforcement along New Jersey’s coastline and keep order during high-adventure events such as fairs and carnivals. In 1916, thecarteretcountycoastguard changed its name to the United States Coast Guard after passage of an act by Congress recognizing America’s “blessed coastlines” from Canada to Key West Florida. In 1970, President Richard Nixon selected Carteret County for use as a test center for USS Constitution class submarines built at Camden Yards (now Camden Yards Parkway). This marked a turning point in coast guard history because it allowed coastal communities throughout coastal New Jersey access to quality patrol resources they would not have been able to afford otherwise. Since its inception, theCarteretCountyCoastGuard has played an important role in providing security along our country's coasts while also promoting economic development through maritime activities that contribute directly to our economy. Carteret is a small town in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,242 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Trenton, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlement in Carteret was founded by Nicholas Carteret and his wife Catherine on July 10, 1714 as "Rochefort", after the River Rochefort in Normandy. They named their farm "Carteret" for Nicholas' ancestor Sir John Carteret who had landed there about 1650. cartaret means little fort or fortified place on a river's bank. The original grant of land to Nicholas and Catherine was 3 miles wide and 2 1/2 miles long with a depth of . In 1734 Nicholas' son-in-law Edward Morrell bought from him an additional parcel of land which extended 2 1/2 miles westward to what is now called Lyndhurst Avenue. In 1736 John Morrell took over from his father-in-law and purchased an additional 4 acres (1 km²). In 1800 George Washington bought all of Montclair Township fromNicholas Carteret for $60,000 cash plus 6 million shares in the new township charter that same year. When Washington moved into his presidential home at Mount Vernon he left behind a valuable estate including farms such as Carteret where he could have resided summers but chose instead to live near Philadelphia until he could move into the White House winter quarters in January 1801. After President James K. Polk vacated Carleton Manor east of Philadelphia during World War II, most of that area became Newark Air Force Base before being annexed by Camden County in 1960s when Newark became its third city status; however much of this area remains rural today with only 0% urbanization according to the 2010 Census count

In 1938, the Coast Guard became an independent department within the Department of Defense. On November 1, 1941, the Coast Guard was redesignated as a service within the National Security Agency. On January 16, 1947, the Coast Guard was renamed as the United States Coast Guardsman. Carteret is a small town in lanes of the Delaware River. A fishing village, it was once one of the few places in America where you could buy fresh cod from the river. In 1802, General George Washington and his army passed through Carteret on their way to Yorktown. The town was destroyed by fire in 1865, but was rebuilt and renamed after Admiral Isaac Coffin Carteret, who commanded American forces at Yorktown. The community has been growing since it became an incorporated place in 1921. It is now home to a high school, two churches, a post office, and a variety of businesses. The primary industry here is agriculture; crops include corn, soybeans, haystack apples (blood oranges), potatoes, and tomatoes.
The town of Carteret was founded in 1784 by Col. George Washington and his men as a stop on their march from Philadelphia to Yorktown. The first settler, Nicholas Suter, built a small cabin on the edge of what is now Carteret Island. In 1824, John Fenton organized a group of farmers who donated land for the town’s initial development. In 1847, Carteret became the county seat of Monmouth County and was renamed after General JamesCarteret, who had died in 1840. The town experienced rapid growth during the 19th century due to its natural resources and excellent transportation connections. During World War II, Carteret served as an airbase for fighter planes used in the Battle of Britain. In 1961, Carteret merged with neighboring towns Neptune and Asbury Park to form Township 3-A (now Monmouth County). The merger created new jobs and increased social activity in both towns. After years of progressivist planning under township trusteeship, however, local government fell into disarray during the late 1990s and 2000s as budget cuts led to increasing crime rates and decay in some areas of town center. In 2017-2018, township trustees recommended that Carteret be abolished due to budgetary constraints; however, Monmouth County Executive Chris Christie vetoed this proposal because he felt it would result in less effective policing within the township itself and more crime outside it.
