It is bordered by Camden Township to the north and east, Pennsauken Township to the south, and South Brunswick Township to the west. The first Europeans to visit what is now Camden were German traders and missionaries in 1724–25. They named it Kerkrade after their Dutch trading post in present-day Rotterdam. In 1814, during the War of 1812, General William Howe's forces burned much of Camden while retreating from New York City; this event is known as "the burning of Camden". In 1838, Mechanics' Institute was founded in what became part of Camden by Elisha Gray and others. The institution had been established in Philadelphia but moved its operations to Camden because of financial reasons. In 1860, Rutgers University (now Princeton University) moved into new buildings on North Third Street near Market Square which are still used today as part of Rutgers University’s Campusplex development. This event is also known as "the founding of Rutgers University". In 1916 when World War I began there wasn't a military garrison or force stationed within city limits so most people living here went about their lives without knowing about it until 1917 when German U-boats started sinking merchant vessels off the coast making life difficult for many people especially those who lived near shorelines with no way to protect themselves from them. So many men died that local officials decided all boats must have markings upon them letting people know where they came from and if they were safe before sailing out into open sea again which made life much easier for everyone including those living on shorelines which then got a little easier because now you knew something was happening not just reports coming through your radio or TV news however like everything else around these times technology improved so eventually we all found out about this thing called submarine warfare thanks largely to a man by name of John Fenton who later became headmaster at our local high school called King's College where we currently are sitting having dinner

Camden is a city in New Jersey that was founded in 1764. It is the second-oldest continuously inhabited city in the United States, after Philadelphia. The population of Camden peaked at over 200,000 in 1830 but has since declined to about 100,000 today. Camden is located on the eastern bank of the Delaware River and is bordered by Philadelphia to the south and east, Trenton to the north, and Atlantic City to the west. The first settlement in what is now Camden was established on land that became part of present-day Princeton during 1676 by English settlers who were looking for a new home after their defeat at Battle of Long Island. In 1764, John Penn granted a charter to make Camden his capital. The city was formally incorporated as a municipality on November 5, 1837. From its founding through 1850 it remained an agricultural township with mainly farming activities until large manufacturing plants began arriving during World War II; these later led to significant economic development which has helped keep Camden one of America's most economically vibrant cities. In 1863, following the American Civil War and following years of political instability in New Jersey due largely to Confederate sympathies among many residents, General Robert E Lee decided that he would move his headquarters from Fortress Monroe in Virginia into northern New Jersey so as not to be directly involved in hostilities on behalf of the Confederacy. As this decision affected both military units garrisoned within New Jersey (the Twelfth Corps) and civilians (such as entertainers like Lew Wallace), there quickly developed tensions between Unionists and Confederates living within town limits without any clear lines or responsibility for either camp being clearly defined or enforced
The first European settlement in Camden was by the Dutch in 1664. The area that is now Camden was part of the greater New Netherland colony and became a separate Dutch town in 1674. In 1814, Camden became the capital of New Jersey after its creation as a result of the United States Constitution.
