Camden is a city in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 22,711 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in New Jersey after Trenton and the ninth-largest city east of Philadelphia. The name Camden comes from two French words: Cámara (a marketplace) and Lapaire (a place of origin). The first European settlers were Dutch who arrived in 1624. An expedition led by Colonel John Woolridge explored the area on October 25, 1629 and named it "Cámara" for its market square where they met sellers of goods from all around New Netherland. As development continued along the north shore of Station Island, traders named their establishments after English counties or landmarks such as White Marsh and Elizabethtown. In 1784, Captain George Washington's forces burned down part of Fort Mercer to clear land for an army barracks that became known as Camden Heights during the American Revolution. In 1814, Nicholas Longstreet founded what later became known as Rutgers University in what would become one of America's most prestigious universities. With increasing commerce and industry emerging along Atlantic Avenue towards downtown Camden throughout the 19th century lead to rapid growth in population with 400 people per square mile moving into what would become Camden by 1871 when streetcar services began operates between downtown Camden and southern points like North Bergen, Paramus Junction and Teaneck. During this time there also began construction on a series of large public works projects which included enlarging both Rutgers' campus (now part of Seton Hall University) as well as building a new municipally connected water system (the Delaware River Watershed Commission now provides drinking water to over 280 cities). Camden, NJ is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 23,890 as of the 2010 Census. It is part of the Philadelphia metropolitan area. The name "Camden" comes from an early English settlement that was located on the south side of the Delaware River and ceded to Pennsylvania in 1777. The first European settler in what is now Camden was Nicholas-Jacques de Montresor, who arrived in 1685 and built a house on the site of present day Camden Yards. He named his property "Montresor Place." In 1739 John Woolridge founded what would become known as Woolridge House as a tavern and inn near where Cherry Street meets Market Street today. This Inn became one of the most important commercial centres in town until it burned down in 1854. In 1853, two brothers by the name of Park bought land at Ferry Road and South 4th Streets for $2,000 to begin developing it into a town site. They named their new town Camden after their home county of England – but with this initial effort they ran into difficulties because there were no streets or even avenues called Camden roads within their boundaries! Their persistence paid off when they managed to get together some money from other landowners and started building streets and houses over the next few years. In 1860 John Dennison donated land along North 3rd Street for development into what would eventually become downtown Camden; this area is today known as Dennison Square (the square fronts onto Constitution Avenue). In 1863 James Buchanan purchased 1/4 acre at Ferry Road which he used as his personal farm until his death in 1880; later that year he donated another parcel nearby to build Adams Cemetery (now Lawnwood Cemetery). That same year also saw the opening of First National Bank which functioned continuously until 1931 when it closed its doors after becoming insolvent. During World War II many businesses were destroyed by bombing raids including Laundromat #1 on Broadwalk which housed more than 100 employees; however all but ten survived intact despite intense damage caused by German incendiary bombs during air raids on September 8th 1944 which flattened much of downtown Camden including Woolridge House & Tavern & several blocks north along Market Street between 9th & 10th Streets – making that date one of greatest disaster hits to Camden since its establishment as an official city’s community nine years earlier!
