Camden, New Jersey is a city in Camden County, New Jersey. The population was 61,611 at the 2010 census. It is the second-most populous city in Camden County after Trenton. The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School of business and economics is located in Camden. The first Europeans to visit what is now Camden were Dutch traders and missionaries who arrived in 1624. In 1685, English colonists founded a settlement on the site of present-day Camden which became known as "Newtown" after they moved there from Southwark in London. The new town was bounded by the Delaware River to the east and west, as well as by Middlesex Township on the north and south. In 1814, during the American War of Independence, General John Sullivan's brigade under Lieutenant Colonel Christopher Gist captured Philadelphia without any resistance from Mayor James Craig or other municipal officials then living inside what is now Camden limits (the town boundaries have since changed). On July 1, 1831, with part of Rutgers University's College of Newark coming under Newark Municipal Corp., Camden became an incorporated borough with a population of 20,000 people; however its government continued to be run by Mayor Craig through his personal office until consolidation with Newark on April 1st 1870 when all functions within City Hall were transferred to that institution effective September 15th 1870 through an act passed by both houses of Congress approved November 7th 1869 effective March 14th 1870 due to lack of space at City Hall not allowing for more than two floors accommodateing mayoral offices in addition to storage for records affecting both boroughs; also Borough Council meetings were conducted outdoors at Mr. Smith’s mercantile building across from Broad Street Ferry landing) until May 10th 1903 when all governmental functions within Municipality including law enforcement were transferred back into Borough hands effective June 15th 1903 pursuant to Act No 22of 1902 entitled An Act for Regulating Affairs concerning Cities having their own Police Department) until today when Borough Council meets indoors at least twice per month following approval by majority vote subject toauntlet if deemed necessary due to inclement weather conditions) Since its incorporation as a municipality it has made strides such as erecting vocational training schools such as Technical High School & Vocational Schools which are now Samuel Adams High School & Saint Peter’s Episcopal Church academy which offer programs such as Auto Mechanics/Automotive Repair Technology/Driver Training/Tech Transfer Programs etc.; planting over 100 trees including 10 Arbor Day Trees throughout year; sponsoring several major events each year such As Patriots Day Parade Park dedication Ceremony Lawn Mowing Civic League Meeting Boxing Tournament etc.; Entered into intergovernmental agreement with neighboring municipalities (eastern section) whereby services will be provided free OF ALL KIND OF SERVICES WHEN PERMITTED BY AUTHORITY UPON AGREEMENT WITH OTHER GOVERNMENTAL ENTITIES LOCATED IN THAT SECTION OF THE STATE INCLUDING CITY OF NEWARK RESPECTIVE TO TRANSPORTATION SERVICE PROVIDED FREE OF CHARGE TO ALL INDIVIDUAL MEMBERS OR THEIR FAMILY MEMBERS ON BEHALF OF CITY COUNCIL REPRESENTATIVES WHEN OUTSIDE CAMDEN LIMITS AND ACCORDINGLY SERVICES WILL ALSO BE PROVIDED FREE FOR ALL KINDS OF EVENTS WHEN PERMITTED BY AUTHORITY UPON AGREEMENT WITH OTHER GOVERNMENTAL ENTITIES LOCATED IN THAT SECTION OF THE STATE); Also Entered into intergovernmental agreement with neighboring municipalities (western section) whereby services will be provided free upon request only upon Agreement Of Authority From Other Governmental Entity Located In That Section Of The State And Services Will Be Provided For All Kinds Of Events When Permitted By Authority Uponthe Authority Of OtherGovernmental Entity Located In That Section Of The State). Camden, New Jersey is a borough in Camden County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 22,711 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia-based Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first European settlement in present-day Camden was by Dutch settlers in 1664, who named it "Carmen." By 1728, English colonists had built settlements including Southwark and Hackensack on the edge of what is now Camden County. In 1781, during the American Revolutionary War, British forces burned all but two of the then seventeen blocks of Newark before withdrawing to Trenton. As a result of this offensive action against colonialists--and as an act of vengeance for that city's role in helping George Washington defeat King George III--Camden became one of thirteen townships within Middlesex County founded on April 14th, 1781. On March 25th 1834 township boundaries were changed when portions of Cherry Hill and East Brunswick were annexed to Camden while Northumberland Township was formed from portions of Westmorland Township with its own government and police department
