The regiment served in the Union army during the American Civil War and was disbanded in 1865. As of the 2010 Census, the population was 29,868. The name "Camden" comes from Anglo-Saxon *kamuðan meaning "a small stream". The first settlement in what is now Camden Township was established by Dutch colonists in 1624 as part of Fort Christina. In 1739, John Woolman founded the first permanent English settler in Camden when he erected a frame house at Ferry Street and Market Place. The first school in Camden was opened in 1793 by Rev George Washington followed by two other schools before being replaced by a gymnasium in 1814. In 1835, Mayor James Smith initiated plans for what would become known as Penn Station which would serve as both a transportation hub for locals and travelers alike as well as provide new housing developments for merchants and workers who had moved into the city since it began to grow commercially. Throughout much of its early years, Camden experienced significant social unrest due to high levels of poverty and unemployment among its citizens which led to sporadic riots throughout the 1870s that left several people dead or wounded.
