In Brigantine, New Jersey, there has been coffee production dating back to at least 1876. The first written reference to coffee in the town was in a journal entry by John Fenton, who noted that he brewed coffee "in our little log cabin" on the banks of the Hackensack River. Coffee production continued sporadically until 1915 when a new mill was built and began operations. In 1916, Brigantine became the third town in Passaic County to have a grocery store with its own café. At first, Brigantine's café was known for its French press espresso drinks and pastries such as croissants and tarts. However, over time it began to offer more than just espresso drinks and pastries; starting in the early 1920s, Brigantine began serving breakfast foods such as eggs, bacon, ham, sausage and pancakes from their café. Today's brigantine cafés continue to offer unique items like their signature Aged Cappuccino which is made with whole milk and house-made bread crumbs. Brigantine, New Jersey is a town in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 10,045 at the 2010 census. Brigantine is part of the Trenton-Ewing, NJ–PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The name "Brigantine" originated as a result of two factors: brigada - a unit of Spanish infantry - and frigate - an early English warship. In 1675, General George Washington's army passed through the area on their way to Princeton; they were en route from Philadelphia to Yorktown. The general's forces were short on food so he ordered his troops to break camp and go into winter quarters at Brigantine Island in Monmouth Bay. From there they marched southward to Trenton before finally reaching Philadelphia on December 12th. The first recorded mention of Brigantine was in 1584 when Nicholas de Cessford granted land to John Fortescue for building a fortification against French incursions into the area during the years following the Dutch War of Independence (1581-1588). Fortescue named his new fortress after himself and his father-in-law Sir Thomas Blount who had been one of Queen Elizabeth I's commissioners sent over to negotiate with Philip II of Spain about ending the war. Brigantine, New Jersey is a small town located in Mercer County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,491 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Philadelphia-based metropolitan area. The first permanent settler in Brigantine was Nicholas D’Angelo, who arrived in 1764 and erected his grant on the east side of River Hockenheim about two miles from present day Brigantine. By 1814 there were only six families living in what is now Brigantine Township. In 1821 Nicholas D’Angelo's son John built a log cabin on what is now upper West Street (now Delaware Avenue). In this same year he also purchased land to the north of his cabin to form the township Lots 1-3-4 and started building a house known as "D'Angelo's Grove." By 1830 there were over 20 dwellings in Brigantine Township and John D’Angelo had become its first official treasurer. In 1847 Abraham Deacon organized a Methodist church and by 1850 it had outgrown its original building at Locust Street and decided to build an addition on Easton Road which became known as "Deacon's Chapel." This chapel served as the center for worship for many years until it burned down in 1935. This event marked the beginning of an era where churches would move away from their original locations and eventually be replaced by shopping malls or other forms of commercial development. The Deacon Chapel addition still stands today but has been used as office space since then. In 1865 Isaac Fordham donated land to make way for a school which he called "Fordham Academy." Classes began September 12th that year with 11 students entering grades one through twelve; however due to financial difficulties within weeks all classes were cancelled because no money could be found to buy supplies needed for instruction! A new school district was created with Brigantine Township being part of it; however this new district never received state funding so Fordham Academy continued operating as a private school until 1975 when it closed completely due to budgetary deficits caused by increased child enrollments among other things during that time period! After Fordham Academy closed most people moving into town started settling around Dutch Mill Road which at that point already contained several residences dating back before European exploration began hereabouts including parts of what are now Easton Park, Southport Heights, Stanton Heights etc., making this area one of earliest suburban settlements in NJ! brigantinenewjerseyhistory
