The first settlers in what would become Brigantine were Dutchmen who arrived in 1664. They named their new settlement after a brigantine (a type of ship), which they had seen on an ocean voyage. The first land grant to Brigantine was dated November 17, 1696, from Nicholas Westfall to Daniel Gifford and his brother Abraham Gifford. In 1814, Brigantine became part of Sussex County when it was created from Monmouth and Atlantic Counties. The town's name comes from its position at the mouth of the Pompton River where tidal waves crash against each other and where salt water enters into the river bed creating brigate (large ships). In 1874, Brigantine was incorporated as a borough by act of the Legislature; it remained an unincorporated township until 1959 when it became a city with its own mayor and council members. On July 1, 1959, all municipalities within Monmouth County were merged into one new county under then-Gov.—and future U.S.—President Dwight D. Eisenhower; Brigantine fell within that newly formed county but remains municipally exempt to this day due to its separate history and functions as an unincorporated township
