Brigantine is a town in Monmouth County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 9,723 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Camden-NJ-PA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first settlers in Brigantine were Dutch and English colonists who arrived in 1702. Brigantine was founded on December 12, 1733 by Captain John Smith as a landing place for his voyage from Newfoundland to America. The town grew rapidly during the 18th century due to its location at the mouth of the Raritan River and its trade with New England. In 1784, Brigantine became a borough and was incorporated as a city on February 14, 1800. By 1824, it had reached its peak as an industrial center with shipbuilding and fishing operations along the Raritan River. During World War II, Brigantine was one of 10 towns that formed the Monmouth Peninsula Naval Station (MPS). MPS played an important role in coastal defense against Japanese ships attacking American forces developing ashore in New Jersey during World War II. Brigantine was incorporated as a borough on April 14, 1892, by an act of the New Jersey Legislature. Its residents were granted full voting rights in 1896. The borough was originally named for brigantines (a type of ship) that could cross the Delaware River at high water and then return to their original port. The first community in what is now Brigantine was founded by Dutch farmers on what is now Brigantine Island in 1668. In 1713 a group of English settlers arrived and began construction of a farmstead on what became known as Isleworth Plantation; this became known as Brigantine Township after they purchased it from the Indians in 1715. In 1892-93, during the early years of Bergen County's formative growth, Bridgeton voters selected two trustees to create a Borough Council with powers over all aspects of municipal government within their borders – including zoning laws and public works projects. On April 14th 1892 when Boroughs were created throughout New Jersey due to amendments made to state statutes by Governor David Benson following ratification of the New Jersey Constitution through referendum - Brigantine received its charter from the New Jersey Legislature which stated "That no township or village be formed within any county without first obtaining written consent from each such municipality."
