Brigantine is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 25,814 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Passaic Valley region. The first permanent European settlers were Dutch-speaking farmers who arrived in 1664 and named their land "Brigantine." The town was incorporated as a village on April 15, 1857, and became a borough on February 5, 1898. Brigantine reached its peak population of 50,000 in 1960 but has since declined to 25,814 residents today. The community took its name from brigantines - large sea shells that are found along the Atlantic coast of North America. The first local Higgins cheese factory opened in 1865 and produced skimpy quantities of cheese for local merchants until it closed its doors in 1957 due to lack of demand. However, Brigantine's rich maritime history can still be seen today with severalUSSs and commercial vessels moored at various docks throughout the community center complex including USS Constitution Museum (the old battleship), USS Merrimack (a whaler), USS Nowak (a submarine), USS Slattery (a destroyer) and more than 20 tugboats! The borough's name comes from the two brigantines that were wrecked off the coast of Brigantine Island in 1719.
