The history of the Brigantine Regiment, or any military regiment in New Jersey, can be traced back to 1777. That year, the Continental Army was formed and quickly grew in size. The enlistments for the new army were quick and numerous, so it was necessary to find a place to hold muster. One such location was at Fort George on Staten Island. This fort served as a base of operations for many months while the Continental Army worked towards conquering Boston. When it became apparent that Boston would not be surrendered easily, General John Burgoyne ordered his forces to march northward towards Albany. The brigade under Col. Robert Rogers fought admirably at Saratoga but then suffered heavy losses when routing British troops near Albany on July 12th, 1777. It is said that Burgoyne considered withdrawing his forces from New York altogether but decided against it because he knew that if he did, his army would become swampy and vulnerable to attack from the British navy should they decide to withdraw again. Brigantine, New Jersey is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,719 at the 2010 census. The name of the town comes from Brigantine Island in the Delaware River and its original site on what is now Brigantine Boulevard. The first European settlers in what is now Brigantine were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1664. They named their new land "Brigantine" after a small island in the Delaware River where they built their houses on flatboats. The first residents of Brigantine were farmers and fishermen who grew crops and raised livestock on the island until 1815 when a canal was completed connecting Philadelphia with Camden that made it easier to get goods to market. In 1824, brigantines began to be developed as fashionableresidential communities around commercial streets near major train stations. During World War I, many people from Brigantine served in the military including Willard Gibbs who became known as America's First Army Surgeon General; Artemas Ward (founder of Newark); John Snedeker (founder of Secaucus); George Washington Moore; and Edward Doyles (founder of Hackensack). Afterward, many people returned to their farms or fishing villages while others moved into larger towns such as Paterson or Middletown. In 1965, following passage of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 by Congress, local African Americans formed an organization called "The Negro Civic League" which aimed to improve economic opportunities for black families living within white neighborhoods across Hunterdon County. This led to increased tensions between whites and blacks which culminated with an August 1967 riot that left one person dead and dozens injured in central Brigantine. In 1969-1970 construction began on Interstate 95 which bypassed central Brigantine making it easier for traffic heading eastbound through town while also leading to more development along Bridgeton Boulevard which replaced most of the clapboard homes that had been built since 1865. As I-95 passed through townlanders started building anew on lots that had once been unused because they could now see views of both English Channel and Atlantic Ocean from their homes!

The Brigantine town of Brigantine, New Jersey was founded on the banks of the Delaware River in 1758 by Welsh settlers. The town grew rapidly and by 1800 it had a population of over 1,000 people. It became an important port for the region and was known for its exports such as salt water fish and clams. In 1851, Brigantine merged with adjoining communities of Perth Amboy and Dunellen to form the new city of Dunellen. After years of growth, Dunellen reached its peak population in 1920 with over 4,500 people living there. However, following World War II their economic fortunes declined and by the early 1960s Brigantine had just 300 residents remaining. Its economy slowly began to decline until it closed its doors permanently in 2000.
