The Bridgeton National Guard was founded on September 20, 1947 by the New Jersey Legislature as the 1st Armored Division of the New Jersey Volunteer Militia. The unit was then renamed the 9th Armored Infantry Regiment on October 31, 1957. On May 8, 1959, it was redesignated as the 3rd Battalion, 9th Armor Regiment and placed in active duty with headquarters at Fort Delaware. On November 17, 1960, it became a regiment-level command under First Brigade Combat Team 2nd Infantry Division at Fort Dix. The brigade also served as its own subordinate command from January 1, 1966 until its disestablishment on December 15 of that year. In 1970-1971 it operated out of bases in Camden County while status changed to battalion level and finally reverted to brigadier general rank on July 1st 1971. It concurrently served as Headquarters and Headquarters Troop for 3rd Squadron 11th Cavalry Group which had been activated at Dover Air Force Base on July 5th 1969 - being redesignated 3rd Battalion (9th Armor), 11th Cavalry Regiment effective December 1st 1970 On October 25 1980 members of the regiment reactivated at Sayreville NJ within Company A (3d Battalion) 705th Parachute Infantry Regiment when their parent unit's activation there ended. Bridgeton, New Jersey is a borough in the U.S. state of New Jersey. As of the 2010 census, its population was 23,591, making it the 9th most populous borough in New Jersey and its 3rd most populous municipality within Bergen County. The borough is located in northeastern Monmouth County on the north shore of Long Island Sound and borders Hackensack to the east, Neptune Township to the south and Woodbridge Township to the west. It became a borough on April 1, 1925, from portions of Rahway Township. The name Bridgeton comes from two Dutch words - "Bridget" meaning 'happiness' and "toon" meaning 'town'. The name was chosen because it had been recommended by then-Mayor John Fenton as being an excellent choice for a new city hall building due to its setting on land that formed part of what was then Rahway Township but which since 1898 had been part of Monmouth County. According to the United States Census Bureau, Bridgeton has a total area of , all land. Bridgeton's neighbor Hackensack is home to one million residents (almost twice as many) and provides more than half their drinking water needs; so much so that Hackensack has even become known as "The Water City".
