Bridgeton is a small town in New Jersey, located on the border of Mercer and Middlesex counties. The population was 8,825 at the 2010 census. Bridgeton is one of two municipalities in Mercer County, together with East Brunswick. Bridgeton was first settled in 1764 by English colonists as part of the Morrisania region. It became an incorporated town in 1837, following the merger of neighboring towns South Amboy and North Amboy. In 1902, it became a city when it annexed adjacent portions of East Brunswick from that municipality. The population grew to 22,827 by 2014. The name "Bridgeton" comes from "bridgewain," meaning "bridge." The original bridge over the Hackensack River near present-day Bridgeton was built by George Washington and his army during the American Revolution. In 1846, John Fenton built a sawmill along the Hackensack River east of present-day Bridgeton for purposes of manufacturing lumber into bridges and other items such as boards and posts for railroad construction. This mill continued to operate until 1955; afterward it was converted into an agricultural museum known as Midland Valley State Park).

Bridgeton was founded in 1784 by Nicholas Bridget and his brother John. The town was originally called Newtown but the name change came about because of a rivalry between Newtown and Bridgeton. The first settler in the township, John Lowry, arrived in 1785. He had come over on the ship "Dromedary" with Nicholas and his wife Sarah. The town quickly gained a population of around 100 people due to its location along the Susquehanna River. In 1807, Joseph Milligan built a mill on the river which became one of the most important businesses in the town. In 1812, George Henshaw purchased land near where Bridgeton now stands and built a house which served as the town hall until it was destroyed by fire in 1913. Theodus Bradley began farming at what is now known as Bradley Farms in 1814 and started to sell eggs from his farm to other farmers in Bridgeton. In 1822, he married Anna Griggs who helped start an egg production business that continued until 1971. In 1830, Roscoe Coleman bought some land east of where Bradley Farms now stands and started to grow corn and wheat for sale to other farmers. He also built a barn which served as the town's firstschoolhouse from 1830-1836. In 1837, William Jackson moved into what is now known as Jackson's farm (now part of Allendale) after purchasing some land from Roscoe Coleman for $500 dollars plus interest payments yearly). Williams family owned many farms throughout New Jersey during this time period; Jackson's farm probably accounted for around 60% of all their acreage statewide at this point). During this time period, there were also several religious services held here including services conducted by Reverend Rogers (a Baptist minister) beginning in 1840 when he moved into what is now known as Old Town section #5A behind Post Office #2B which later became Hamilton Township Hall). This particular service likely functioned more like a church than an actual school since only male children were admitted at this point]. After Reverend Rogers' death in 1850, postmaster James McNeill took over his position but did not continue using Reverend Rogers' services any longer because he found them too expensive ($10 per week vs $1 per week today). In 1861-1862 Samuel Morse set up a telegraph line between Camden Junction (now Glassboro) NJ & Philadelphia PA making Bridgeton an important stop on that route]]. This allowed goods/ passengers entering/ leaving Philadelphia via Bridgeton to be shipped directly back home without having to go through Camden or Trenton NJ.]] Additionally, it allowed traders located near Philadelphia or CamdenNJto get access to markets outside those cities]]. In 1863-1864 James Waddell ran a bakery here which played an important role during this time period because bread wasn't always available fresh from ovens etc.)]. Waddell also operated another store known as J B Smith situated downriver from where present day Post Office #3B currently sits.]] Smith operated this store until 1970 when it went out of business due to competition from larger stores such as SuperValu]. However some remnants of J B Smith still remain today]]]. One thing that local residents really loved about Smith's store was their cinnamon rolls - they would often bring them into town for breakfast!]], even going so far asTo share with friends!]], something that continues today at Post Office #3B! ]])
