The Marine Museum of New Jersey in Bridgeton, NJ is home to one of the largest and most diverse collections of maritime memorabilia in the tri-state area. The museum has a rich marine history dating back to 1876 when it was founded by Captain John Sutter. In 1916, the museum purchased a small island off Port Royal Road in Monmouth County for use as their permanent collection site. As the island grew in size and importance, so too did the collection at Mountham Station. In 1962, the museum moved from its original location on Long Island Sound to its present location onshore on Plumstead Lane. The current building was built between 1978 and 1984 and stands as an important symbol of Bridgeton’s growing stature as a center for maritime culture. The Maritime Museum’s holdings include various vessels from both American and British navies, along with assorted artefacts associated with seamanship, fishing and shipping. Some of the rarest items on display include a model brigantine (the first ocean-going steamship ever built) that was constructed in 1789 by Nicholas-Jacques Conte at his shipyard at Cherbourg dockside; an 11 foot long cutlass used by pirates during early America’s Golden Age; artifacts belonging to both USS Constitution (1787-1814) and HMS Warrior (1801-1805) ; plus more than 2,200 pieces ofautical equipment including anchors, buoys, lifejackets, flares and helmets. In addition to its extensive naval Collection, Mountham Station also houses significant artifacts from local landings such as those made by Commodore John Woolridge aboard HMS Beagle (1902), Lieutenant Commander Edward James Barker's landing party which discovered Staten Island in 1624 or Captain James Cook's Discovery Expedition which landed on Long Island in 1777 or even Revolutionary War era firearms such as cannons captured from Brunswick Castle . Mountham Station is open daily 9:00am - 4:00pm except Mondays when closed due to expiration of lease

Bridgeton is a small town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 3,562 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark-Union Township, and is bordered by North Brunswick to the south and east, Short Hills to the north, Middletown to the west and east, and South Brunswick to the northwest. The name "Bridgeton" is thought to be derived from an early English settler's daughter called Bridget who married John Baptiste de la Grange (1674-1751), a French Huguenot nobleman who had come over as part of a French invasion force in 1701. The name may also have originated with Brigitte or Rebecca Oldenburg (died c. 1675), one of three daughters of Christopher Oldenburg (flourishing 1700s Merchant Prince of Orangeburg County NJ) and his wife Elizabeth Steuart (née Weir). The first recorded use of "Bridgeton" appears on maps dating back to 1712 when it was spelled "Bridgewater". In 1814 Colonel Nathaniel Hackett purchased land near what is now town center from George Washington Irving for $1 million dollars which he used as his hunting ground for years until he donated it back to government control in 1821. Hackett then donated his extensive farmlands including parts of what are now town center and Bridgeton Heights which became home base for the American Football League's New York Giants during their early years there before they moved across Union Avenue into Madison Square Garden in 1923. During World War II American troops were quartered here before being evacuated back home as airfields were bombed; many local residents remain refugees today due to this time period’s impact along with other post-war challenges such as declining tax revenue that has caused some businesses failures over recent years while others have flourished like college athletes coming through town - creating opportunities not available when their grandparents did not have access thereto.
