Bridgeton, NJ is a small town located in Union County, New Jersey. The population was 5,898 at the 2010 census. It is the smallest municipality in New Jersey and the 11th smallest municipality in America. The first settlers to what is now Bridgeton were primarily Irish Catholics who arrived in 1778. They founded a small village on the west bank of Raritan River which they named "Bridgewater". In 1814, the United States acquired present-day Union County from Great Britain and designated it as part of New Jersey. As a result of this change, Bridgewater became part of Readington Township and then Middlesex Township before finally becoming part ofUnion County. The original churches in Bridgeton were built by Catholic clerics from Ireland who had been expelled from their homeland during the Potato Famine that swept Ireland during 1845-1849. The first Protestant church was built around 1840 by Methodists who had fled England during that time period. That church was destroyed by fire in 1847 and replaced by a new structure that still stands today - Bridgeton Presbyterian Church (now called First Baptist Church). The post office was established at Bridgewater on October 15, 1824, under the name "Farmingdale". It changed its name to "Bridgewater" on February 14, 1830; "Raritan" on March 3rd; and "Union" on April 27th (the date when New Jersey became an U.S. state). In 1850, due to increased settlement and commerce within present-day Union County caused by accessibility to sea transportation through Rutgers University's existing port at Camden (then known as Elizabethport), Bridgwater grew rapidly into one of the most important mill towns in America because it possessed both water mills for flour production as well as salt works for making cheese and other products used throughout centralNJ such as Newark/Trenton etc... In 1892 Fraternal Order Of Police Lodge No 2 had its current building constructed downtown with donated land lot number one which has served as headquarters ever since... On September 21st 1907 members from all over North America gathered at Fraternal Order Headquarters located inside Second Presbyterian Church & Masonic Hall for an annual Quiz Show Contest sponsored by Lodge No 2... By 1920 there were over 350 lodges affiliated with Fraternal Order Of Police Lodge No 2 across North America... During World War II many local boys enlisted or volunteered with local military units including Coast Guard Station Pier View where they performed duties such as loading supplies onto ships or providing defense against German submarines off Cape May Bay..
