Bound Brook is a small town in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 5,752 at the 2010 census. Bound Brook is located on the border of Middlesex and Union counties. Bound Brook began as part of the Monmouth Township area in early 17th century and was named after one of the three townships that made up Monmouth County: Boundbrook Heights, Bedminster and Brunswick. In 1784, Bound Brook became an incorporated municipality according to the Constitution of New Jersey. The first road through what is now Bound Brook was a dirt path leading from Princeton to Plainfield. The path was improved by Nicholas Stroud (1768-1846) who built two bridges over Great Egg Harbor Creek in 1810 and 1815 respectively. He also constructed a millrace which still exists today and provides water for many homes in Bound Brook Valley. In 1847, John Ludden established Newark & Elizabeth Railroad Company to build tracks from Newark to Elizabethtown via Bound Brook Valley - one of the first railroads in North America. The company failed within a few years due to competition from other companies such as Penn Central Railroad and Pennsylvania Railroad. In 1916, when Middlesex County formed, Bound Brook became part of it as well as neighboring Freehold Township inside Union County which had been created earlier that year. As more families moved into areas closer to job opportunities or shopping malls outside of town (the so-called " suburban renaissance"), residential development ceased along with most commercial activity inbound/outbound bound onto Route 1A between I-95 exits 5 & 6 until recent times; however some businesses have reopened including Gouda's cheese store on Rt 1A near exit 7B during business hours; however there has been much redevelopment around Exit 10B where former industrial land has been redeveloped into housing complexes known locally as "The Strip". There are plans underway for new retail developments including office space at Exit 9B opposite Pathside Park Regional High School while another major project is currently under way adjacent to liberty University's campus planning call for a $200 million mixed use stadium/housing complex called "Stadium Place". This will be adjacent to Interstate 95 south side exit 8C which will become home to PATH train service with access from all levels off I-95 south side including high rise development providing easy pedestrian connectivity between downtown Newark Liberty International Airport and Stadium Place .
