Kapp in 1922 and was known as The Dutchman's Coffee House. In 1936, the shop was renamed The Dutch Maid Cafe and later changed its name to The Dutch Man Coffee Shop. In 1957, the shop closed due to financial difficulties and reopened as The Dutchman's Garden cafe with a different name but the same hours. The first espresso machine in Bergenfield was used at The Dutch Man Cafe on Summit Avenue in 1957. In 1984, The Dutchman's Garden cafe became an independent business and changed its name to Small Batch Coffee Company. Small Batch Coffee Company continued to serve coffee until it closed its doors in 2003. Small Batch Coffee Company is one of only a few cafes that still offers small batch coffee today!

The village of Bergenfield was founded by Pieter Bogaert and his family in 1714 as a small farmstead on the east bank of the Raritan River. The first settler to arrive in what is now Bergenfield was Nicholas de la Garde in 1738. By 1856, when it became a borough, Bergenfield had an estimated population of 1,500 and consisted of just over 100 homes. At that time there were no schools or public services; all citizens depended upon their own personal means to provide these necessities. In 1869, Borough President Isaac Newton recommended that the town take land from Baldwin Township for its own development because the latter’s residents were “paupers and scalawags who have not given us any benefit since our incorporation as townships five years ago.” On November 6th of that year, two-thirds of the residents voted in favor of annexing Baldwin Township; however, only 8% actually moved into new homes when they became available due to lack of space within Bergenfield itself (despite being offered tax breaks). In 1870 elections held under new Borough Charter provisions which allowed for more wards than at present didBergenfield annexes both Morristown and West Orange on December 7th 1870 with total votes (at least) certifying annexation: 3 certificates reflect this election results - one from Morristown Mayor James Fenton certified by Clerk John Talty on December 8th 1870 while another certificate has been lost but appears to be from West Orange Town Supervisor Abel Dougan entitled "Annexation Certificate No. 2" which shows vote tally for "Morris Township" vs "West Orange Township". By the 1920s, Bergenfield had become one of the most important economic communities in New Jersey because of its heavy industry and its location near Philadelphia. The city ofPhiladelphia annexed Bergenfield in 1926, but has never completely absorbed it into its growth; some residents still maintain their own identities within both cities.
Bergenfield is a borough in Bergen County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 7,871 at the 2010 census. It is located on the north shore of Long Island Sound. The first settlers in what is now Bergenfield were Dutch immigrants who arrived in 1714. They named their farm "Wieringen" after Wisborg, a town in the Netherlands that they also reached by boat. In 1745, Nicholas de Velde and his wife Margaretha founded a small Presbyterian church in what is now Bergenfield Township. In 1837, John Darrow bought the Pine Street lot from Nicholas de Velde and built on it a small frame house which he called "Darrow's House". Darrow was an accomplished lawyer and politician who served as Mayor of Hackensack (1860-1861), State Senator from Passaic County (1877-1879), and U.S. Congressman from New Jersey (1903-1905). He also donated land to Stonington Township for its initial development as an agricultural colony during the early 1800s. In 1860, voters made bergenfield township an incorporated municipality with a mayor and five council members elected at large plus one member each for two municipal districts: North Bergen District and South Bergen District. The first Board of Chosen Freeholders was elected in 1868 following ratification of changes to township form by referendum ballot results; all Borough Council members were chosen through nomination rather than election as had been customary since before incorporation into borough status by resolution of the board majority vote only six years earlier when bergenfeldting became part of Borough Park Township).
