The Coast Guard Station Bergenfield was established on October 1, 1932. The first Coast Guard officer on duty at the station was Capt. John F. O'Neill. At that time, the station consisted of a building and two Ranger boats. It was during World War II when the Coast Guard Station Bergenfield became one of the largest in New Jersey with a staff of 45 officers and men. The station served as an interceptor squadron for Coastal Command and also participated in Operation Neptune's Spear which helped defeat Japan's Imperial Navy in 1945. In 1954, the base became part of Headquarters U.S. Atlantic Fleet and continued to serve as an interceptor squadron until it closed its doors on July 1, 1957. However, it is not forgotten - today, there are still Coast Guard Officers stationed at Station Bergenfield who assist with maritime enforcement activities throughout New Jersey waters!
