The Bergenfield Air National Guard Base is home to the 9th Airlift Wing and the 436th Airlift Group. The 436th Aero Squadron was activated at Bergen Field on November 1, 1942, as the first squadron in the United States Army's Air Forces in Europe (AAFEE). From its inception until it was disbanded in 1945, the 436th Aero Squadron operated Lockheed P-38 Lightning fighters. In World War II, the unit flew fighter missions over enemy territory. In 1944, while flying from Schweinfurt airport to Koblenz Airport, Germany during Operation Overlord, one of our aircraft lost power and crashed into a mountainside killing all five passengers on board. This was one of only two incidents where an AAFEE pilot died in action during World War II. On July 15, 1945, when hostilities ended in Europe and war ended with Japan's capitulation that day, members of the 436th Aero Squadron took off from Bergen field for their final mission: delivery of humanitarian supplies to Japan through Okinawa prefecture. Upon landing back at base after delivering their cargo safely and without incident they were herded onto buses by other units and driven away by military police officers who toured each plane prior to its departure. That same day MacArthur was announced as surrendering General Hideki Tojo instead of continuing resistance against him following his atomic bombing of Hiroshima on August 6 which caused death or destruction more than 100 miles north of Tokyo; this event marked the end of World War II in Asia. After World War II ended there wasn't much use for F-9s so they were either scrapped or sold off to other countries like Taiwan and South Korea so they could use their planes for combat purposes again but then again those planes also got scrapped because noone wanted them or they just didn't have enough money to keep them running so eventually all these F-9s just sat around somewhere collecting dust until finally someone decided to fly them out here to NJ for some unknown reason? Maybe it was because we're a state within New Jersey that has an airforce presence? Or maybe it's because we're close enough to New York City that there might be some potential business opportunities down there? Who knows but whatever it is we definitely have something special about us!
The USAF Gift Shop is a valuable part of the USAF family. It provides an opportunity for members to purchase items related to their military service. The shop is open every day except Thanksgiving, during which time it is closed. Members can find a variety of gifts for all occasions, from individual mugs and badges to complete kits and movies. The gift shop has been in operation since the early days of the USAF. It was first established as the Air Force Exchange Service in 1947. At its inception, it was one of three services that operated within the USAF together with Army and Navy stores. The store was initially located at Wright-Patterson AFB in Dayton, Ohio. In 1957, it relocated to RAF Lakenheath in England where it remained until 1992 when it moved permanently to Lackland AFB, Texas. In 1998, the gift shop underwent a renovation that replaced its original flooring with more modern materials and equipment. New displays were also created on several different levels including an education wing that provides information about both military history and airpower doctrine; a section devoted exclusively to toy soldiers; plus an exhibit area dedicated to aircrafts and weapons systems (including jets). In addition, there were new features such as video games for children aged 4-8 years old; craft activities such as quiltmaking or piecing together model airplanes; and demonstrations by experienced technicians on various types of firearms or airlift equipment.
The Bergenfield Air National Guard Base was the home of the 376th Bomb Wing from 1951-1976. The wing was reactivated on 9/11/2001 and has since been stationed at Lackland AFB, TX. In 2006, the 376th Wing deployed to Al Udeid AB in Qatar as part of Operation Neptune Spear.

Bergenfield, New Jersey is a town in Morris County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,858 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Newark–Jersey City metropolitan area. The first Europeans to visit present-day Bergenfield were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1624 and named it "Barentsgaard". A year later, English colonists arrived and called it "Bergenfield". The name originated from the word berg (mountain), meaning mountain peak or hill. In 1814, when Morris County was formed from parts of Essex and Middlesex counties, Bergenfield became a part of that county. In 1821, two brothers founded the Seaman's Store on Ferry Road and soon became one of the largest landowners in what would become Morris County. They donated land for a public square and schools which opened in 1825. In 1828, they erected a small stone courthouse which served as their home until 1886 when they moved to their current location on Market Street within Park Ridge Township. In 1837-38 local farmers started raising chickens on an open field near what is now crosses Boulevard and American Avenue; this led to creation of today's Arden Gardens neighborhood adjacent to the former factory site where chickens are still raised today.
