The name of the town comes from the Welsh word "bell" (a type of metal) and "mawr", meaning place or district. Bellmawr was founded by English colonists in 1724 as a small village on the Raritan River. It grew rapidly during the 18th century as land was gifted to settlers and new towns were created throughout Morris County. In 1812, Bellmawr became part of the newly formed Township ofMorris and remained an unincorporated community until it became a borough in 1951. The first post office in Bellmawr opened on October 12, 1724, under the name of Maguirestown. The name changed to Bellmawr on January 15, 1812 after becoming part of township formers Morris County. On May 5, 1951, Bellmawr became a borough with its own government and original six-member board of commissioners appointed by Governor John Fenton based on recommendations from a committee chaired by Borough President Abraham Jaffe). Bellefonte Lake is located within Borough boundaries; however Bellefonte Lake functions as an open air swimming pool for residents only and does not provide public access to water sports such as kayaking or canoeing
