Bellmawr is part of the Princeton- Plainsboro-East Brunswick, NJ Metropolitan Statistical Area. The town was first settled by German colonists in 1755 and became a borough on April 14, 1876. It was incorporated as a city on October 15, 1981. The name "Bellmawr" comes from an English location called Bellwether (now Warminster). The original settlers likely named their community for the bell they found atop a hill in the town. For many years it served as the seat of government for Sussex County and had its own court system. In 1876, however, incorporation into Princeton made Bellmawr an even more important community with access to all of Princeton's resources. Today Bellmawr is known for its beauty and natural scenery - including numerous small lakes and reservoirs - as well as its rich history which can be observed through various museums and archives located throughout the town center. Bellmawr is a small town in New Jersey, United States. It is located on the Raritan River and is part of theMorristown area. The population was 5,819 at the 2010 census. Bellmawr was founded in 1792 by John Bell and his brother-in-law, Nicholas Southwick. The community was named for Sir Walter Scott's novel about a Highlander who moves to America to seek adventure and find love, "Bellmawr." The first post office in Bellmawr opened on May 25, 1801. In 1814, the name was changed from West Milford to Bellmawr after Major General James Hays (1757-1836), Jr., governor of New Jersey during the War of 1812. In 1870, a large brick factory were built in what is now downtown Bellmawr by Jethro Gibbs & Sons Coal Company. The company operated until 1984 when it closed its doors for good. Today you can still see some remnants of this factory including an open-air market and some old buildings that have been preserved as part of the Morristown Historical District Museum complex which includes a library and museum dedicated to local history and culture. Downtown Bellmawr has also seen significant redevelopment over time with development taking place around Route 9W between US 1A/9N (now Livingston Street) and US 19/20 (now Broad Street). A new shopping center called Marshall Square anchored by Macy's currently operates along this corridor with restaurants such as Olive Garden being developed nearby on smaller blocks east of Livingston Street near I-95 exit 292B which served as a transportation hub for this area until recent years when it became too noisy for residential developments or commercial uses; currently planned development would extend Randolph Avenue south from I-95 exit 292B past Marshall Square into DowntownBellMawR while preserving Randolph Avenue's existing retail corridors within limits
Bellmawr was founded in 1795 by the brothers John and Nicholas Bell. The first post office was established in 1802. In 1827, the town was renamed for General George Washington. In 1866, Bellmawr became an independent city. In 1945, the United States Atomic Energy Commission built a nuclear laboratory in the town. The plant closed in 1995 and produced no plutonium.
