Bellmawr is a town in Hunterdon County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 8,812 at the 2010 census. Bellmawr was established by grant from the Crown of England in 1732, and became a borough in 1879. It is named for Sir John Bell (1693-1762), an English general who fought in the American Revolution and served as British Minister to Westphalia (now Germany). The first settler in what nowBellmawr Township was Amos White. He built a cabin on the east side of Hackensack River near today's Depot Road and later founded another settlement, Goodspeed Settlement, on land he acquired from the Dutch colonists. In 1733, King George II granted Captain John Forbes a tract of land east of present-day Livingston Street between Hackensack River and Ridge Avenue for £200 sterling. The grant included what is now Bellmawr Township. Forbes had been appointed Surveyor General for New Jersey under Queen Anne and physicist James Bradley had recommended that hePurchase this land to improve transportation between Burlington County and Philadelphia. In 1801, when Princeton University moved to Princeton Junction from Newark Castle after being founded as an academy by royal charter in 1692, most of what are now Hunterdon Township, Glen Rock Borough (later part of East Rutherford), Plainsboro Borough (later part of Paramus) and Uniondale were detached from Middlesex County to form Hunterdon County because it seemed necessary "to provide more spaciousness for agriculture." With its new boundaries came new names - Briggsville became Uniondale while Plainfield became plainfield; Westphalia became Bergenfield; Haverhill became Swedesboro; Haddon Heights became Northvale; Calloway become Lewesseytown; Black Horse Ferry becomes Ferryport Landing while Clinton becomes Clifton Park. One Hundred Thirty seven residents voted on February 14th 1789 to incorporate as a township under the name “Bellemawr” with Samuel Morse as its first President/Citizen/Governor/Mayor /etcetera... One Hundred thirty five citizens participated including twenty two members elected at large…the vote resulted in incorporation on March 2nd following which Mayor Samuel Morse took office... On November 15th 1800 Committee Van Valkenburgh offered 1d per acre for lands within our limits but no one responded so we gave them back without compensation... On January 5th 1802 minutes state House session Journal entry says: “The motion being seconded by Mr Scribner & carried unanimously by ye committee i offer you my resignation & go into retirement effective immediately” Samuel Morse resigned on January 5th 1802 A year later on December 12th 1803 commissioners reported they have found 10 acres within our limits worth $4000 dollars which would make us a full borough A year after that they report there be 3 lots left unbought & worth $6000 each so we become an independent municipality called Bellemawr with Judge Isaac Norris as its first mayor
The Bellmawr Township was organized on April 3, 1814, from the portions of Middlesex County west of the Raritan River. The township was named for General George Washington Bell and his wife, Margaret Nicholson.
