The Bellmawr Army Ammunition Plant was an ammunition depot and arsenal located in the town of Bellmawr, New Jersey. It was opened in 1916 and operated until 1966. The plant manufactured artillery projectiles, rockets, mortar rounds, and bombs.
Bellmawr is a small town in New Jersey, United States. It is located on the north bank of the Raritan River, east of Newark and west of Paterson. The population was 7,564 at the 2010 census. Bellmawr is part of Middlesex County. The community was named for John Bell, a Revolutionary War officer and member of the New Jersey House of Representatives from Cumberland County. The first settlers in what would become Bellmawr were two families who arrived in 1785 and prospected for land along the Raritan River. When they found nothing suitable they sold their holdings to Colonel John Caldwell in 1802. Caldwell built himself a log cabin near what is now downtown Bellmawr and became its first settler. The town's name derived from his location: "Belle-Maire" or "Beautiful Meadows". In 1808, when Colonel John Caldwell died, his son Ezekiel took over his holdings and added to them acreage further downriver until he had an area of . In 1814, Ezekiel donated all that remained to provide a public square on which residents could gather for business purposes as well as create schoolrooms and graveyard sites around it. In 1830, Samuel Morse bought some property adjacent to where today's south side street corner stands (now Broad Street) for $1 per acre; this gave him control over much of what would later become downtown Bellmawr including much current infrastructure such as the old belltower which still hangs above Main Street today! However it wasn't until 1868 when Elias Howe purchased more property just east of downtown from Samuel Morse – giving birth to Howe Plaza! This development saw many businesses open up including Girdersmiths bakery (which still exists), Hardees restaurant (later Wooters), Miller’s barbershop/beauty salon, Post Office (now Verizon Wireless), Stroud’s grocery store/pizza place and finally Sears & Roebuck department store – all within walking distance! Downtown Bellmawr quickly grew into one of Bergen County's most vibrant communities with numerous stores and services catering to everyone from farmers market shoppers to commuters looking for local goods & services! By 1908 there were even 5 banks in operation providing banking services available 24/7! Today there are only 3 remaining banks with widespread service availability throughout Bergen County - including branch locations right here in Downtown Bellmawr! Banks like Bank Of America have made huge contributions to our economy by opening branches here in Downtown Bellmawr allowing us access to new customers & offering extended hours during weekday mornings too! Bellmawr, New Jersey was founded in 1756 as a small community near Princeton, NJ. The town grew rapidly due to its location on the Susquehanna River and its access to flour and other goods exported by the British market. By 1800, Bellmawr had over 2,000 residents and a Presbyterian church. The town's growth came to an end with the American Revolution, when most of the town's citizens sided with the British side. After the war, many of Bellmawr's residents moved away or were forced out by events such as taxes increases and a lack of agricultural land. In 1920, Bellmawr was merged into Plainfield Township. Today, it is one of 28 municipalities in Union County that are part of Plainfield Township. The history of Bellmawr goes back to at least 1756 when it was founded as a small community near Princeton, NJ on the Susquehanna River by Scots-Irish settlers from County Derry (now Northern Ireland). The original inhabitants were farmers who supplemented their income from farming with fishing and trading aboard shipboats coming downriver from Scotland. When transportation became available onland after Confederation in 1781, these farmers began selling their products directly to consumers in Philadelphia and other markets along the Delaware Bay PATH system. They also developed trade businesses with local merchants located on Main Street which still exists today as part of downtown Bethlehem. In 1814-1815 truckloads of potatoes arrived at Bellmawr from Newark daily; this was unusual because no wagon traffic existed then between those two cities! Most likely because there was no road then connecting Newark and Plainfield Township – today’s Route 94 – until 1828 when construction began on what is now Route 9 northbound between Newark Liberty International Airport and Belvidere Road in Plainfield Township (the first section now known as Sunrise Highway). At that time there were only two routes leading westward out of Philadelphia: One ran through Newtown Square via Market Street eastbound before crossing underpasses at Second Avenue South (now Interstate 295) en route to Trenton; while the other ran south along Market Street past Easton before terminating at Spruce Street just west of present day Citizens Bank Park in Iron Pass Park northeast of Milford Haven where passengers disembarked for onward travel across Delaware Bay onto ferries taking them back home across Governors Island before arriving safely at Cherry Hill Ferry Terminal in Glassboro Borough…. thus providing one means for people from both Philly & Trenton to get goods/serviceshwthout havingto go all the way out [ofPhiladelphia]!! At some point during this time a school house operated by Reverend John Hutton opened up behind what is now First Baptist Church ( situated today within present day Penn State University Old Campus), serving students until about 1840 when new schools were built nearer Philipsburg Rd., including Holy Cross School which served students until 1865….. after which Holy Cross pupils took buses direct to Scranton where they could buy school supplies! A post office operated herefrom 1840 thru 1865…. everyone usingPost Office got 1¢ per letter sent….. very costly postage rate back then!
