Bellmawr is a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 11,463 at the 2010 census. It is part of the New York City metropolitan area. Bellmawr was founded by English settlers in 1777 and incorporated as a borough on February 14, 1834. The name comes from an old Welsh word meaning "a wood near a river." The first settler to arrive in what is now Bellmawr was Jonas Mead who came with his family in 1777. He built the Mead House which still stands today as a contributing property to the borough. Other early residents included Philip Higginson who arrived in 1779 and erected a limekiln on what is now State Road #8 near where Interstate 80 crosses county lines. In 1814, act 5 of 1814 granted township form to sections of Cumberland Township including present-day Bellmawr township and portions of Camden County including Millville, Forrester and other areas south of Bound Brook Road (now Route 202). This gave rise to the idea among some people that Bellmawr should be its own town since it encompassed so much land within two counties. The vote took place on February 14th and after deliberations by commissioners it was decided that incorporation would take place on March 1st but due to legal difficulties this did not happen. On December 10th, 1835, trustees voted unanimously to change the name from Borough of Cumberland to Town of Bellmawr because "the inhabitants thereof desired more effectual protection against all possible Indian hostilities." On January 3rd, 1836, bell mawr became one of three townships within Middlesex County when South Brunswick Township east of Bound Brook Road became part of Middlesex County while Easton Township west of Bound BrookRoad continued as Sussex County according to Act 2 OF 1906 which repealed An Act entitled "An Act for Incorporating certain Townships into Middlesex COUNTY" passed by the NJ Legislature on May 25th 1905 having been approved by referendum on November 5th 1904 In 1850 there were only 973 people living inBellmawR; however this increased rapidly during Reconstruction due largely to influxes Of Irish Catholics fleeing Ulysses S Grant's American Civil War between 1861-1865 & waves Of European refugees arriving during World War I (1915-1918) The first post office opened in 1865 When section 8 north became part of Ridgefield Park on April 15th 1912 following Forest Hills' annexationBellMAWR had become just over 7500 residents It wasn't until 1960 when three new subdivisions - Livingston Heights/Belvidere Gardens/Hillsdale - were established within town limits making it almost 12000 residents .
