The devastation caused by these two fires helped spur development around Borough Hall Square and led also to passage of similar legislation establishing regulations governing fireworks use throughout the county that still apply today. Bayonne was formed on April 14, 1814 from parts of Ridgefield Township and Westwood Township. It was named after Nicholas Bayon who had arrived there in 1712 and claimed land that lay east of the Hackensack River. The first town meeting was held on October 10, 1814. On July 1, 1836 it became a U.S. military post with Fort William Henry as its first garrison commander. The fort closed in 1865 and all troops were withdrawn from Bayonne on November 5th that year by order of President James K Polk following the American Civil War.
