Bayonne is a borough in Hudson County, New Jersey, United States. The population was 21,402 at the 2010 census. Bayonne was formed on April 10, 1807 from portions of Monmouth and Middlesex counties. It is named for Brigadier General Isaac Bayonnet, who fought in the French and Indian War and was killed near Trenton. The first European to visit what is now Bayonne was Giovanni da Verrazzano in 1524. He named it "Benedictus", after his patron saint. In 1697 the Dutch founded a trading post here called Fort Nassau on the Hackensack River because of their fears that English traders were encroaching into their territory. In 1704 large parts of Bergen Township including present-day Bayonne Heights were acquired by Frankford Township as part of a land grant from King George II of Great Britain for Colonel John Moore (1701-1768), one of New Jersey's first settlers and one of its most important landowners. The grant included 5 square miles (12 km2) of township west of the river and 8 square miles (21 km2) south of it; all this land remained townland until 1965 when it became part of East Brunswick Township.
