The United States Army Garrison Bayonne was established in 1776 as a military post on the Jersey Shore. The fort continued to be used by both sides until 1898 when it closed down due to financial difficulties. Today, portions of the fort remain open for visitors as part of the Bayonne Heritage Museum.
