In 1828, Nicholas-Jacques Conte, owner of an Italian restaurant in Newark, NJ, served up a cup of robust black coffee to customers who contributed $1 each for a taste. This event is often considered to be the beginning of gourmet coffee culture in America. Throughout much of its history, Atlantic City was seen as a center for espresso and chocolate production. In 1915, Julius Emanuel Frank opened his first espresso shop in town and quickly became known as one of Americas most prestigious cafes for hisoma (a type of cortado) and other specialty coffees. Today, Julius Emanuel Frank's famous cafe still serves delicious espresso drinks with creative toppings like whipped cream or chocolate shavings on top. In addition to their café businesses, other notable Atlantics involved in early gourmet coffee movement were Mrs. Seymour Saperstein (1868-1948), who ran an unsuccessful grocery store adjacent to her home which she called Café du Monde; Harry Rosenwald (1897-1974), founder and president of JCPenney; Franklin D Roosevelt (1925-1945), who patronized Mr. Rosenwald's store during his years as President; Lloyd Wright (1902-1959), chairman and CEOof United States Steel Corporation; Edward Gellhorn (1901-1982), author and photographer; Irving Krimsky (1920-1996), nightclub promoter; Serge Lattesatoeffsky (b 1934). However, this did not stop other entrepreneurs from trying to make their mark in Atlantic City; within five years, several new businesses had opened up in town such as Clothing District Store & Cafe (1911), Newsagent (1920), Automobile Sales Co.(1924), Masonic Temple No 1(1927), Watchtower Bible & Tract House (1928) and Eastern Air Lines (1929). On July 14, 1930, President Herbert Hoover announced that he would be visiting Atlantic City for business purposes only; this marked the first time a president had ever visited the city while it still functioned as an open-air military base. soon after Hurricane Irene hit Atlantica on September 11th 2001 there was much concern over potential damage done to both townspeople and infrastructure caused by high winds gusts up to 185 mph which resulted in extensive flooding throughout most of downtown area which destroyed many properties including many local stores & restaurants
