The Atlantic City Coast Guard has been providing law enforcement, rescue and first responder services to the residents of Atlantic City for over a century. The agency was founded in 1912 as the Police Department of Atlantic City and is today one of the most well-known and respected coast guard services in the United States. The Coast Guard’s mission is to protect our coastline, waterways, ports and coastal communities from marine traffic, harmful materials and other dangers. In addition to its regular patrols on the Jersey Shore, the Coast Guard also responds to requests for assistance from local municipalities during special events such as hurricanes or floods. Atlantic City is a city in New Jersey, United States. The population was 889,936 at the 2010 census. It is the county seat of Atlantic County. The first European settler in what is now Atlantic City was Nicholas de Montresor, who landed on the site of present-day Atlantic City on February 14, 1664. At that time it consisted of only a few scattered buildings and was known as "The Inlet". In 1808, John Stevens founded Stevens Point, Wisconsin as the first U.S.-built town in Minnesota Territory; Stevens Point became an incorporated town on March 14, 1851. On December 15, 1912, Atlantic City and its dependencies (East Brunswick Township and West Bound Brook Township) merged to form one integrated municipality with a population of over 1 million people under one roof - an event which has been cited as one of Americas most dramatic municipal mergers ever. On October 29th 1909 during Prohibition days in New Jersey local bootlegging operations were conducted from various locations throughout the state by organized crime boss Angelo Mazzoli using his "Nighthawks" team made up of gunmen from Philadelphia and other parts of Pennsylvania working for Mazzoli's boss Anthony Rocco. This marked the beginning of professional smuggling activity which would continue until 2007 when Ocean County began allowing legal sales starting January 1st 2009
