The Newark Air National Guard's 1st Battalion, 326th Airlift Wing provideslift support for the New Jersey Department of Defense. The unit was activated on December 8, 1942 at McGuire Air Force Base in Trenton, New Jersey and served with the United States Army Air Forces during World War II. In 1949, the squadron became an airlift squadron within the Continental United States Air Force when it joined IAF as part of its new command structure. It gained its current name on October 1, 1951 when it was placed under the command of First Lt. Gen. Leslie Roulston's Fourth Tactical Fighter Wing as a component organization of that wing's flying arm - which became known as The Atlantic City ANG after its relocation to Atlantic City from Newark in 1951-1952. In 1969-1970, the unit converted to jet aircraft and served as aqcuipment depot for USAF Ninth Tactical Fighter Group located at Seymour Johnson AFB North Carolina until its return to Newark in 1972 and assignment within Ninth TFWc headquarters untilactivated on September 5th 1973 due to budget cuts and realignment within USAF inventory resulting from Nixon administration hardline defense policies). Although not directly involved in any combat missions during this time period (the squadron operated aerial refueling tankers) it played a significant role both politically and militarily by providing Boeing KC-135 Stratotanker(R) storage facilities for Ninth Tactical Fighter Group Headquarters personnel while also operating temporarily at Seymour Johnson AFB Carolina between deployments; these were occasions when fighter groups were deployed deep into enemy territory where they would be unavailable to fly operations against my forces ashore). This eventually resulted in more than 6000 groundings/landings including 290 combat sorties flown by 331 pilots/enlisted men from NJANG between 1967-1973; this number is especially noteworthy given that "nearly all" major USAF airlift assignments during this time period wereatemporary or subordinate units located outside of NJANGbased squadrons' operational area). On July 15th 1990NJANG participatedvigorouslyinOperation Desert Storm when over 1400 personnel & equipment arrived safely upon arrival off Jacksonville Beach FL with 4 C-123s having departed daily successfully since April 7th 1989 enroute back home following successful Operation Noble Eagle which had seen first deployment test flights less then 2 weeks earlier! This was only 3 months after Squadron activation which made it one of only 10 active wings activated during that timeframe! A few days later another KC-135RB (Gift from Saudi Arabia) arrived bringing even more troops & equipment! Although disbanding on October 12th 1993 due to budgetary reasonsNJANG retained many parts&equipment across various squadrons throughout its history ensuring continuity OF SERVICE through their various configurations thruout their many incarnations!
