Asbury Park is bordered by the municipalities of Seaside Heights to the north and Neptune Township to the east and west. Asbury Park's eastern border is formed by the Raritan River. It lies on the southern bank of the Raritan River between its mouth on Long Island Sound and Hackensack Bay. The first settlers in what is now Asbury Park were Dutch colonists who arrived in 1664 from Rotterdam. They named their new town after Sir George Washington's estate at Mount Vernon in Virginia, which they had seen while visiting that area during the English Civil War (1646-48). In 1714, as part of an effort to consolidate all Monmouth County towns into one government under one governor, Abijah Fry left Asbury Park with his family and founded Neptune Township to its south. He named it for Prince Frederick Augustus of Denmark, son of King Frederik II of Denmark (1712-50). Fry became Freeholder 2nd Class in 1718 and Town Clerk 3rd Class in 1720; he also served as Deputy clerk from 1722-30 and as Surveyor General for Monmouth County from 1724-30. He died suddenly on October 4, 1727 at age 57 without leaving any children behind him. His widow married Colonel Edmund Stroude (died 1810), a soldier involved in the American Revolution who had migrated from England several years earlier as part of a group led by John Dickinson (1723-89) who became President of Pennsylvania (1780-84). Their daughter Julia married Colman Ayer (cousin once removed) on January 1, 1768; they raised two daughters before her death on December 25, 1840 aged 78 years old. In 1801 Lieutenant Governor Nicholas Caton appointed Solomon Toland administrator over Asbury Park following its merger with Neptune Township to form Asbury Park Borough because "the township could not support itself." The borough was incorporated on February 26th, 1802 under Law No., No., 2 known as An Act To Encourage Farming within limits laid down for that Purpose among other things; it included: "For said borough there shall be erected a public works office...to be called “The Works Department”" On February 12th 1830 Commissioners Messrs John Wickersham & John Pendleton opened upcerns about water supply being inadequate so On March 15th 1830 commissioners opened up anew concerns about water supply being inadequate so At this time commissioner Messrs Wickersham closed shop until further notice due to lack o funding however still open concern about water supply still remains today Although no longer closed
