In 1787, George Clinton had been elected to represent Middlesex County in the Pennsylvania General Assembly and he decided to settle in what are now Sussex and Monmouth counties as part of his mission to create new settlements throughout Pennsylvania. On August 29, 1787, he finalized the plat for Asbury Park with fellow settlers Isaac Twomey and Middletown farmer James Robertson. On January 3, 1800–1800,[1] Asbury Park received its first full incorporation as a borough.[2] The origins of Asbury Park date back to 1834 when it became an incorporated town following passage of an act by the Passaic County Legislature known as An Act For The Province And District Of Passaic In pursuance To A Scheme Which Was Proposed By Its Citizens And Approved By Governor James Ketchum[3][4]. At this time Morristown was still within Passaic County and its boundaries did not include present-day Asbury Park although Routes 23 & 25 passed through both towns at some point during their travels east-west across Counties Poleskimiec & Montrose (now Freehold Township).[5][6] During World War I (1914-1918), many local businesses closed their doors due to patriotic fervor; however, most residents continued to live normal lives despite wartime restrictions placed on them by military authorities. Many families took up farming or manufacturing activities post-war while others returned to their pre-war lifestyles such as shopping at local stores or going out for evening entertainment which resumed shortly thereafter. However aspects that made postwar life difficult were rationing which began after Germany's war victory in 1918 while other controls were put into place including blacklisted labor practices specific to munitions manufacturers during World War II; nonetheless traffic congestion created unique challenges for drivers today who must negotiate tight streets bordered by high rises and luxury condominiums while dodging police patrols roaming around at all hours looking for offenders who may have broken laws punishable by fines or imprisonment rather than just being given a warning citation like everyone else went through during that era.
