Asbury Park's history dates back to 1814 when the town of Asbury was founded on Brielle Island off Long Branch Harbor by five Dutch settlers who had come to Long Branch from Rotterdam. The name "Asbury" originated from an event that took place there on April 1, 1814 when Major General Nicholas Monmouth (1764–1827) arrived with his American regiment and burned all the stores in Asbury Heights before dining at Kings Head Tavern. The first hotel built in Asbury Park was the King's Head Tavern which opened in 1824. It became known as one of the most fashionable hotels of its time due to its high quality architecture and extensive wine collection. In 1860, painters named Edward Munch and Edward Hopper were born in Asbury Park; Munch became well-known for his traditional Norwegian Folk art while Hopper developed a career as an American painter working primarily in Europe
Asbury Park was founded in 1764 by George Washington and his first wife, Martha. The town became a center of trade and commerce after the opening of the Erie Canal in 1825. As it grew, Asbury Park began to become known for its legendary nightlife and its luxury homes. In 1916, Asbury Park absorbed rival town of Neptune into its municipal government. The merger helped revitalize Neptune and make it a more vibrant community. In 2007, Asbury Park became the home of the New Jersey Devils hockey team.
