From 1840 to 1865, Commodore John Pappagee managed this facility while it underwent several renovations including a new pier and tower that allowed for increased productions schedule as well as new technologies like steam power (which later led to ships being built faster than ever). In 1862-1865 Commodore James Higginson ran this facility when it became known as Portsmouth Naval Shipbuilding Yard due to its importance during World War II both offensively and defensively. During World War II, HMS Enterprisewas built here using local resources including wood from local mills while other warships were constructed out of German aluminum or Japanese steelurgical machinery . In 1951-1952 Norton Simon remodeled these facilities into what is now known as NAS Hampton Roads which consisted of two distinct yards with separate docks where different classes of ships could be completed simultaneously without having to wait for other classes of vessels to come back into service . This gave sailors from any fleet a chance to use their skills on any typeof warship they desired without having to wait for another class of vessel to come back into service . It also helped reduce costs since each class could be developed concurrently instead of having multiple projects going on at once which would have cost more money overall . In recent years NAS Hampton Roads has been renamed Norfolk Naval Shipyard due again to its strategic location within Norfolk County along Virginia’s Potomac River estuary Today there are five main yards located within NAS Hampton Roads: Lee Island Yard (producing larger patrol boats), Shearwater Yard (producing minesweepers/minelayers), Willingboro Yard ( producing Joint Task Force - Higgins helicopters), Suffolk Yards (producing ballistic missile submarines) and Northrop Grumman Newport News yard focused mainly on missiles production Although NAS Hampton Roads is home to some world-class warships such as replaced USS Yorktown after her loss in 2015 she remains primarily a munitions manufacturing center with various types(HMS Queen Elizabeth Class frigates)of munitions being produced here including anti-ship cruise missiles(Joint Task Force - Higgins) , air defense systems( THAAD ), land assault systems( Stinger Missile )and even booze! As you can see Nimitz Class amphibious warfare ships like USS Essex can regularly be seen docked alongside George Washington Class nuclear powered submarines like NCIS Gulfstream G550 aircraft carriers while older destroyers like USS Mayflower can often be seen moored up next door ready for deployment
