While both areas house significant populations of Dutch Americans who descend from settlers who arrived during Reconstruction period (1865-1913), there is little evidence that either area had any connection with each other prior to 1840. Instead, it appears that these two locations independently developed their own unique varieties of coffee beans – which we now know as maga beans. While it is difficult to pinpoint when exactlymagasoakebinexistedinPortsmouth,[1]it seems likely that they were indigenous to this location at some point before 1840.[2] Regardless of when they originated, however, Marks Bean Company – a leading North Carolina roaster – started stocking these beans exclusively within their stores beginning in 1951vduringtheFirstWarForIndependence (#4). This marks not only an important milestone for maga coffee as a whole but also indicates how well this bean variety was accepted by local customers and businesses alike during this critical moment in American history. Since the late 1800s, coffee has been a popular drink around the world. The Portuguese discovery of Java in 1402 led to the first recorded mention of coffee (caffe) in writing. In 1797, Italian artist and navigator Vincenzo Foscari brought cedarwood and cocoa beans back from his trip to Indonesia, which gave birth to the first Indonesian coffee plantation. Coffee was introduced into Europe by sailors on their return trip in 1798. Coffee became an official beverage of Italy in 1811. In 1865, Baron Franz Schmidgall discovered caffeine beans while searching for oil reserves at Suez Canal Zone. He started production of espresso machines based on these beans in Vienna, Austria. In 1875, Dutchman Joris van Rijn founded Koffiehuis Amsterdam with his own Café Royal brand name for his new coffee house style called “Rijksmuseum Café” (Royal Museum Cafe). This ushered in a new era for cafe culture in the Netherlands that continues today! Café culture spread throughout much of Europe after World War II as peopleortalized their favorite pastime through films and television shows such as The Golden Age Of Coffee (1948), Charlie Chaplin's Breakfast at Tiffany's (1957), and I Dreamed A dream about You (1968). Portsmouth, New Hampshire is a town in Hampshire County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 3,513 at the 2010 census. Portsmouth is the only municipality in New Hampshire that has not yet been merged into the statewide city of Manchester. It was originally part of Merrimack Township and then part of Portsmouth township until 1881. Portsmouth was first settled by English colonists in 1609 as "Newport" after their ship "Nova", which had reached there from London on October 26 that year. The name derives from a word meaning "fortuitous bay." In 1614 John Winthrop founded an English colony at Plymouth Colony and the town became known as Portsmouth because he placed his ship-yard there for his new colony's warships. The town's navy played an important role during the American Revolution; when British forces burned down many of Portsmouth's buildings in 1775, it successfully sued for damages against British forces and won a large judgment. In 1778–79 General John Burgoyne captured Portsmouth while besieging Boston and used its ships to supply his army moving up the coast through what is now Maine and Rhode Island to take control of Long Point on Cape Cod – one of Burgoyne's key objectives in achieving his campaign against King George III. In 1801, when Manchester was created as a statewide city, Portsmouth became part of Manchester Township within that city limits. On March 1, 1871 (fifteen years afterManchester had become a state), Portsmouth incorporated as a village under separate jurisdiction from Manchester Township with its own Board of Selectmen and mayoralty). At this time it had a population of 513 people living in 112 homes divided among twelve wards which were organized into two precincts (North Beech ward included most downtowns eastward to High Street) with each precinct electing three members to serve terms expiring June 30th every year; these elected officials also served as assessors for local taxes assessment district No. 2 covering parts of nearby Goffstown (now Sayreboro) and Hampton Roadssee also: ListingofUnincorporated TownsinNH
