The first permanent English settlement in what would become Portsmouth was founded by Capt. John Smith in 1614 as part of his exploratory expeditions along both coasts of North America. Portsmouth grew quickly due to its strategic location overlooking both points where trade with Europe took place: from Boston down through New York City before continuing on to Philadelphia and then London. The town became an important seaport because it had easy access to England's lucrative shipping lanes. In 1775, during the American Revolution, Portsmouth sided with Great Britain against Continental France and lost its charter as a city; however, it continued to grow rapidly as a commercial center until after World War II when shipbuilding declined nationwide due to wartime restrictions on exports (Hampshire has since regained its status as a major maritime port). At its inception, AFB consisted of over 122 aircraft squadrons across 24 states across America and Canada; it was also responsible for providing air support for Operation Overlord – Allied forces’ assault on Nazi Germany. Today, AFB remains one of America’s most important military installations and is home to over 460 operational aircraft squadrons – making it one of America’s top aerial combatants. Today's USAF is composed largely of former WWII veterans who have committed themselves to fulfilling our nation's defence needs through continuing service academies and deployments worldwide. Portsmouth is a town in Portsmouth County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,876 at the 2010 census. It is the seat of Portsmouth County and is part of the Manchester–by-the-Sea, NH metropolitan area. The first European settlement in what would become Portsmouth occurred in 1624 when Baptist missionary Samuel Maverick built a cabin on an island in the river Tonkin near present-day downtown Portsmouth. In 1627, English trader John Smith sailed downriver from Jamestown and founded a small trading post at what is now called "Maverick's Point". The town was named for this early settler. In 1764, during the American Revolution, General John Burgoyne's army invaded New Hampshire and captured much of the state including Portsmouth. The town did not surrender until after British withdrawal from North America had been completed three weeks later. During their occupation, Burgoyne's troops destroyed many homes and businesses in town. After his retreat from New England, Burgoyne ordered his general officer numbering over 50 to disband by order of Secretary of War Thomas Jefferson because they were found to be unarmed and disobeying orders to march back home with their weapons. Portsmouth again experienced heavy Revolutionary activity during the siege of Yorktown (1781). The Battle of Bunker Hill resulted in more than 25 deaths on both sides as well as dozens wounded or taken prisoner within minutes following a fierce gunfight that began shortly before dawn on April 19th,. This event helped define Patriotism throughout most of America and gave rise to local nicknames such as "The Roundabout City" because so many people were killed or wounded there that day outside London’s Whitehall Palace where George Washington was then making final preparations for his role as Commander-in-Chief of all Americans forces against British General Cornwallis' army based at Saratoga Junctionoutside Albany NY
