Nashua, New Hampshire is a small town located in the northeast corner of New Hampshire. Nashua was founded in 1769 by General John Stark and his wife Hannah. The town became an important railroad center during the 19th century, and its economy has been based on textile production and manufacturing since the early 20th century. Nashua is now a cultural and tourist center, with a rich history and legacy to share with visitors. The largest industry in Nashua prior to World War II was shipping container production; however, this sector has declined over the years as technology has replaced traditional methods of shipping goods. Other significant employers include: Grumman Aerospace Systems, Macy's Inc., NH Motorsports Park, NH Veterans Memorial Hospital, NH School District #1, NH School District #2 and NB Power Corporation. Theuckusen Air National Guard Base is also located in Nashua. Nashua was known for its apple orchards until the late 1800s when settlement began around what are now Route 3rd Street and Main Street. In 1825-26 surveyors discovered virgin forest along present day Route 3rd Street which led to speculation that land could be developed for mills or other commercial purposes; however this theory did not pan out due to lack of interest from settlers at that time. A mill was built on present day Main Street in 1827 by Elisha Gray but it failed due to low demand from local farmers who instead used hand tools to produce flour from cornmeal bought from traders outside of town. It wasn't until 1830 that a gristmill was built on what is now High Street by Ebenezer Goodrich; it operated until 1875 when it burned down because of faulty construction. In 1835-36 Major Amos Kendall surveyed land east of present day I- 95 (now US 1) which ran parallel topresentdayRoute 3rd Street; this area would become known as Kendall Square after him. On July 4th, 1840 Nashua residents organized into two societies called "Hancockians" (later renamed "Yankees") after Revolutionary War patriot Colonel Nathaniel Hancock who had refused military service despite being offered an appointment as captaincy in the 2nd Regiment Massachusetts Volunteers under General George Washington; later he served as Surgeon General during the American Revolution In 1856-57 Reverend Josiah Quincy organized a church plant near what are now Meeting House Road and Depot Road; Quincy first preached there in December 1855 following his sermon "A Sermon on First Thanksgiving" which drew large crowds throughout New England In 1861-62 James Kapp purchased lots near where Wheeler Avenue intersects US Hwy 95 south ofpresent dayNH school district #1 ; Kapp established an agricultural enterprise called Kapp's Mills which produced hay, beans, potatoes etc.; however this venture failed due to bad weather conditions & competition from larger operations started by Luther Rice & others within days of its establishment . By 1865 Kapp had sold all his interests in Kapp's Mills & moved back home where he died about one year later . Present day Kirkland Drive runs parallel to mainline US Hwy 95 between Nashua & Amherst ;the former location ofKapps Millponds occupies what is today Kirkland Drive . During winter months many businesses close up shop while workersdig through snow drifts looking for necessary supplies w/o fear they will lose their jobs . Many Christmas trees are grown here too!
