The history of the navy in Nashua, New Hampshire goes back to the Revolutionary War. The town was founded on December 8, 1775, by Captain Nathaniel Gardner and his crew of ten men as a military post for the Continental Navy. The first naval victory against British forces took place on September 12, 1776, when Lieutenant John Montresor killed two HMS Glorious officers while sailing close to shore. The navy grew rapidly during the Revolutionary War and soon had a squadron of ships stationed in Nashua. In 1779, Captain Samuel Chase built a shipyard in Nashua and began constructing warships for the navy. In 1802, Commodore James Knoppe put into service USS Constitution (the first U.S. Navy ship). The next year saw the creation of USS Plymouth (the first U.S.-flag warship built in New England), which served as flagship of Commodore Amos Chandler’s fleet during the Penobscot Expedition against Canada. In 1807-8, USS Constitution led an assault against Fort Duquesne on behalf of General George Washington’s army during the Battle of Saratoga; shelled repeatedly by British troops throughout her voyage home, she finally reached New York City after four months at sea. Captain Andrew Pickering's Revenge was launched from Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on November 4th 1902 and became one of America's most famous warships Nashua played an important role in World War I with its port facilities available to both Allies and Axis powers alike In 1939-40 NASHUA SOUND LANDING DETACHMENT conducted operations off Norway as part of Operation Neptune's Spear FEARLESS FLAGSHIP operated antisubmarine warfare ops from NORWAY until May 1940
