Nashua is the smallest city in New England and only has a population of 7,500 when measured per square mile. The name "Nashua" means "place where the white people gathered." The first settler in what is now Nashua was John Dunster who arrived there around 1720. In 1802, United States Senator Nathaniel Weems moved his family to Nashua from Providence because he felt that with more people living near him, he would have better control over Congress’s finances. In 1824, General Israel Putnam built a sawmill on Salmon Falls River north of present day Nashua while also developing land east of town along Water Street into what is now downtown Nashua. This development created new residential neighborhoods south of Salmon Falls Boulevard and west of South Union Avenue between Centre Avenue/Church Street/Water Street/Fulton Road today known as Old Town Area (OTA). In 1892–93 four men by the name of Phelps took out a $10 000 loan from J P Morgan to start a dry goods store at 5 Park Place in downtown Nashuanh

In 1837, Nashua became a town when it joined Portsmouth and Manchester. It retained this name until 1959 when it changed to Nashua. According to the United States Census Bureau, the town has a total area of , of which is land and is water. Nashua straddles theNH-3 highway that connects Boston with Concord andManchester. As of the census of 2000, there were 8,527 people, 3,955 households, and 2,824 families residing in the town. The population density was 1,687 people per square mile (634/km²). There were 4,046 housing units at an average density of 521 per square mile (209/km²). The racial makeup of the town was 97% white (non-Hispanic), 0% black or African American; 0% Native American; 0% Asian; 0% from other races; and 1% from two or more races.
