Nashua is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 9,531 at the 2010 census. Nashua is the most populous town in Hillsborough County and the 10th most populous municipality in New England. Nashua's economy is based largely on agriculture and support services for rural residents. The town has a humid subtropical climate (Cfa), typical of New England. The history of Nashua goes back to 1636 when General John Winthrop founded the first English settlement in what is now Hillsborough County, New Hampshire. In 1764, British forces burned down much of the original settlement as part of their campaign against Native Americans. A new village was established by Colonel Jonathan Humphreys near present-day Manchester, and called Friendship because it had been founded as a result of his efforts to merge several villages into one cohousing community with similar architecture and features. Friendship became an important trading center between Great Britain and its colonies during the Revolutionary War era; goods such as munitions were transported there from Boston through its port on Cape Cod before reaching other parts of America. Afterward, Friendship reverted back to English hands until 1802 when it was purchased by Captain Samuel Blaisdell who renamed it Nashua after himself and moved his family there from Scituate, Massachusetts two years earlier. In 1804–1805, Major General George Washington visited Nashua during his army's winter encampment west of Portsmouth; he praised the town's handsomely appointed streets and buildings while also expressing concern about some aspects of local life which he considered "unsound". Seven years later, in 1814–1815 following representations made by Governor James Bowdoin concerningbridge repairs being neglected in Nashua – then one of NH's leading merchants – Bowdoin ordered that all necessary repairs be made within twelve months or face possible financial sanctions from London if they did not meet certain benchmarks set forth including erecting a new bridge across NH’s largest river without approval from government headquarters at Concord). In 1825–1827 construction began on what would become known as "The State House" –today’s First Unitarian Church – adjacent to what are now Lake Street and High Street in downtown Nashua. At that time only men could own land withinNH so progress was slow until 1840 when restrictions were lifted allowing women to purchase property adjoining NH’s western border pending ratification by state legislature which did not take place until 1893 During World War II large amounts of food were produced here including flour for soldiers overseas Nashua experienced significant growth following the war with numerous businesses opening up including several stores located on Main Street today known as The Square —the first mall ever built outside NYC or MA There has also been an increase in service jobs throughout the city giving rise to many restaurants along with primary care clinics One recent development has been a high school named after Benjamin Franklin (tentatively scheduled for completion early 2020) which will bring more jobs into town
