The history of the Coast Guard in Manchester, New Hampshire goes back to 1892 when the first coast guard station was established. At that time, it was only a small force with only four officers and thirty-six enlisted men. In 1915, the Coast Guard Station in Manchester was moved to its current location on Route 9 and renamed as the Station at Portsmouth. The Station at Portsmouth operated until 1963 when it became part of the Department of Defense Headquarters in Washington D.C. The Headquarters detachment then relocated to Hampton Roads, Virginia and changed their name to Headquarters United States Coast Guard Reserve in 1978. On July 1st, 2001, Headquarters United States Coast Guard Reserve merged with United States Customs and Border Protection through a Memorandum of Agreement. As a result, today the Coast Guard has three main missions: protection of U.S coasts and waters; prevention of maritime crimes or disasters; and assistance during natural disasters such as earthquakes or hurricanes

The Manchester Coast Guard Auxiliary was founded in 1912 by a group of businessmen and merchants. The first coast guard unit was organized and manned by men from the Masonic lodge on Cedar Street. In 1916, the present Coast Guard Station at Manchester opened with the help of $5,000 in donations from businessmen and bankers. In 1951, the auxiliary merged with the New Hampshire State Police to form one agency. In 1978, the Manchester Coast Guard Auxiliary became an affiliate member of the United States Coast Guard (USCG). Today, we are dedicated to providing service to our local communities through volunteerism and rotorcraft operating in support of homeland security initiatives across New Hampshire and Massachusetts.

In 1898, Manchester became an independent town, and in 1960 it merged with neighboring Amesbury to form Nashua County. Founded in 1634 by Puritan settlers on land now owned by Nashua County, Manchester quickly became one of New England's most important communities. The city thrived due to its location near major trade routes and its close proximity to other villages and towns throughout southeastern New Hampshire. By 1800, Manchester had become one of America's largest cities with over 100,000 residents. The 1820s were especially prosperous for Manchester as it emerged as a leading center for textile manufacturing. During this time period, Manchester patronized many notable establishments such as Emerson College (now Amherst), State University of New York at Oneonta (now UNH), and Dartmouth College (now Hanover). In 1998, following years of debate that began with concerns about downtown traffic congestion caused by increasing enrollment at nearby universities, Manchester voted to secede from Nashua County and become an independently incorporated town again. This move received support from many within the community who saw their hometown being taken away while others saw benefits such as increased economic opportunity and more control over their own destiny. With growing success since its return to self-government several additional municipalities have been incorporated into Nashua County since then including Ayer Estates (2006), Grafton (2007), Dummerston (2008), Arlington Heights (2009) and Lebanon Valley (2011). today there are twelve municipalities operating within Nashua County: eight full or parttime municipalities plus two special districts which provide services not typically found within municipal borders; three towns that have municipality status but do not operate government functions; four villages which are considered part time jurisdictions only; one town which operates exclusively as a village; two school districts which provide services not typically found within municipal borders; one public library district which provides services not typically found within municipal boundaries; three water districts providing comprehensive service to all residents inside or outside of their respective boundaries
