Lebanon was first settled by British colonists in 1776. The town of Lebanon, New Hampshire, was founded in 1812. In 1862, the town became a part of Massachusetts. In 1976, the town became a part of New Hampshire. It is now a small village with a population of around 100 people. Lebanon is named for the biblical city of Beirut and its surrounding area. The original inhabitants of this area were Bedouin Arabs who had come to live in present-day Lebanon from Syria in the 6th century AD. After centuries of Oral history and legend passed down through generations, historians began to piece together details about this period in Lebanese history in the early 1800s. They discovered that there were two ancient cities located near modern-day Beirut: one called Beit Jala (meaning “House on the heights”) and another called Sidon (meaning “New Jerusalem”). Both cities had been abandoned long ago but their remains were still visible today as well as many artifacts that indicated their importance during this time period. The story goes that when Jesus Christ came to earth he resided for a short time at Mount Hermon before going off into heaven to be awaiting his return. His followers followed him throughout his journey until they reached what is today Lebanon on top of Mount Hermon where he presided over them for three days before ascending into heaven again on an angelic chariot. From here He went forth into all corners of creation sharing His gospel with those who would listen and eventually returning to Earth shortly after to establish his kingdom which would last forever!
