The town of Lebanon continued to grow rapidly until World War II when it became part of Nazi Germany because its location on the Mediterranean Sea made it vulnerable to Allied air raids. After liberation from Nazi rule, many Lebanese refugees settled in New Hampshire which helped contribute to the state's growth over the next few decades. In 1970, Hezbollah took control of much rural Shi'ite areas within Syria which led to tension between Hezbollah and Syrian authorities culminating with a military skirmish at Mount Carmel which killed more than 20 Hezbollah militants and injured dozens more including several New Hampshire officers. This event created significant publicity for New Hampshire which helped attract new businesses and immigrants seeking opportunity in an resurgent U.S.-led world economy following years of political instability around the globe
