The U.S. Naval Service first arrived in what is now Laconia, New Hampshire, in 1775 during the American Revolution. The town was purchased from the Pequot Indians by Commodore John Stevens and his squadron of warships on July 1, 1775. In 1868, Commodore Perry’s Expedition passed through Laconia on their way to visit Great Britain. The town came under U.S. military jurisdiction after the war and became a naval station on December 12, 1903 when President Theodore Roosevelt ordered construction of a new navy shipyard there at Pier 4. The first USS Constitution class battleship was launched here on May 8, 1905 and World War I veteran USS Maine was commissioned here on November 15, 1918 as the last warship of her type in the United States Navy. Since then, Laconia has been an important port for both domestic and export commerce along with its vital role as one of America’s five nuclear power plants providing energy to millions of homes and businesses across the nation. Laconia, New Hampshire is a town in Sullivan County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,567 at the 2010 census. Laconia is part of the Manchester–New Haven Micropolitan Statistical Area. Laconia was first settled in 1710 by Quakers and their families. It became a town in 1847 and incorporated as a village in 1892. The name "Laconia" comes from the Greek word "λακόνιος" (lakonos), meaning "farmstead of Lakonia." The town's two churches are dedicated to St. John the Baptist and Our Lady of Mount Carmel: one built in 1851 and the other completed in 1907. The original white clapboard buildings were replaced by brick in 1915-16; these were declared a National Historic Landmark in 1976. Laconia has also been home to several businesses including an insurance company (1890), a bank (1901), an appliance store (1915), and an advertising agency (1950). Today, Laconia remains largely agricultural with some light industry present such as cedar production and manufacturing of ice skaters
