Laconia is one of two towns in Hampshire County (the other is Goshen) and is part of the Portsmouth-New Bedford, NH-MA Metropolitan Statistical Area. The first people to live in what would become Laconia were the Pembroke men who settled there around 1775. Their land was given to them by General John Sullivan during the American Revolution. They did not fight for America but rather helped support it by farming and raising sheep on their property. The next year they built a meeting house and laid out streets that still run through town today.
