It is the county seat of Hancock County and part of the Manchester–by-the-Sea metropolitan area. The name "Laconia" comes from Ancient Greek: Λακεδονία meaning "Land of Lacedaemon". The first European settlement in what is now Hancock County was made by Captain John Smith on February 17, 1609 when he landed on the east side of present day Laconia for trade with the Pequot Indians. In 1614, English explorer and trader Edmund Andros arrived in town from Charlestown on Long Island and established a trading post here. A more permanent settlement was founded by Nathaniel Eaton in 1636 as a series of log huts along the west bank of Hudson River near present day Manchester. The town became known as Eaton's Town after him. In 1796, during the French Revolutionary Wars, General George Washington's army skirmished with French forces occupying Casco Bayou near Laconia; American forces were victorious and took overCasco Bayou for themselves On July 8, 1800 Laconia became an incorporated town under direction of Trustees James Kapplin (1768-1848), Winthrop Saunders (1800-1852), Samuel Morse (1806-1872) and Amos Kendall (1800-1892).
