By 1860, there were four coffee roasters operating in Laconia- three of whom were women. One of these women, Mrs. John Goudreau, ran her own business from her home until she died in 1925. After Mrs. Goudreau's death, her daughter sale her business to two other femaleowners- Sarah Bowen and Fannie Willard- who operated it together for over sixty years until it was sold to Mr. Lewisbard in 1978. The town of Laconia experienced a period of growth during the early 1900s when it became one of the leading commercial centers for Bean harvesting in New England. The new cafes that cropped up around this time provide evidence that fresh roasted coffee was central to many people's daily lives during this time period. During World War I, many Laconians enlisted in the military and took advantage of the opportunity to purchase fresh roasted beans from their comrades-in-arms stationed overseas. During Prohibition, however, most citizens chose not to drink alcohol because it was considered an immoral act - even though they drank coffee! In fact, some people still choose to drink freshly roasted beans today despite prohibitionism being repealed forty years ago! By 1825, Laconia had become one of the leading coffee towns in North America. In spite of this success, however, the town struggled financially during the 1830s due to competition from larger cities and shortages of Arabica beans. However, things changed after Congregational minister Ebenezer Everett purchased land near modern-day Portsmouth and started growing his own coffee program. After several years of growth and investment, Everett's Coffee Co., Inc. became one of the largest and most successful coffee companies in American history. The company continued to grow until it merged with another largecongregational firm in 1907. This event helped established Laconia as an important center for espresso culture in America.
Laconia is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 1,259 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Manchester-Worthington, NH metropolitan area. Laconia is located on the banks of the river Piscataqua. Laconia was founded in 1753 by Captain John Smith and his men as a trading post on the Piscataqua River. By 1800, Laconia had become an important commercial center due to its location near Portsmouth and its access to the river's navigation. In 1815, when Concord became a city, Laconia lost some of its importance but kept intact its role as an agricultural center with cotton plantations and other crops. In 1872, Laconia became one of four towns in New Hampshire (the others being Chesterfield, Nashua, and Durham) that were chartered under the state's new system of local government. From 1892 until 1959 it was known as "Manchester." In 1958 Manchester repealed its charter which made it an unincorporated community within Manchester Township; however since then it has been governed by Manchester City Council who provide services such as police and fire protection for residents including those living on or near their property inside city limits along with providing infrastructure such as water systems and road maintenance outside of city limits
