Laconia was a small town in New Hampshire when the American Revolution began. The town was founded by John Laconia and his wife, Judith, in 1775. In 1803, the town became part of Portsmouth. In 1834, Portsmouth merged with Laconia to form a new municipality. The townsite remains within the present-day town of Laconia. The first settler in what is now Laconia was John Laconia, who arrived there in 1775 as part of the effort to overthrow British rule in New Hampshire. He and his wife Judith established a small cabin near the present day intersection of Main and North Streets. By 1800, John had taken over several other businesses in the area and had built a log courthouse on land he had purchased from Nicholas Fenton. In 1803, when Portsmouth merged with Laconia to form a new municipality, both towns were located on opposite sides of Lake Champlain; however, by 1830 both Towns were reunited under one roof at North Street and Main Street junction. The merger resulted from political considerations: Portsmouth wanted to keep its relationship with its larger sister city strong while Laconia desired better access to education for its citizens. Lagona is derived from "llan" meaning an opening or aperture and "galia" meaning girl or female child (from Latin galaxiis). The name may have been given because during winter months ice sheets often accumulate around ponds or lakes which can be seen from high up due to their sheer size."
