Laconia is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 4,643 at the 2010 census. Laconia is part of the Manchester-Wilmington metropolitan statistical area. The first Europeans to visit what is now Laconia were the British in 1769 and 1770. A ferry service connected Laconia with Portsmouth and other eastern towns until 1820 when the Connecticut River was dammed, separating New Hampshire from Vermont. In 1835, John Eliot began farming on what today is known as Eliot's Hill and built a mill on the river for spinning woolen yarn into cloth. By 1840, he had also developed a distillery for making whiskey. In 1851, he married Sarah Brewster; they had four children: John (1852-1901), Sarah (1855-1934), Charles (1858-1925) and Alice (1860-1945). The early days of industry in this small town were difficult; it took many years before any manufacturing started up thanks to scarce resources and an isolationist attitude by some of the townspeople who saw themselves as better off without outside competition. However, over time industry has come to dominate the economy with several major companies based here including Goodyear Tire & Rubber Company (GTB), PepsiCo Inc., Ryder Truck US LLC., Waffle House Corporation and Blue Bell Brewing Co.. The town continued to exist as a separate municipality until it merged with Concord on January 1, 1907. Laconia is home to Dartmouth College which opened its doors in 1836 and has played an important role in both the history of New England and America. Dartmouth is also home to several other universities including Brown University and United States Military Academy at West Point. During World War II, Laconia served as Headquarters for VIII Corps (inactivated 1945) and IX Corps (inactivated 1946).
