The Keene National Guard is one of the oldest and most well-known organizations in New Hampshire. The Keene National Guard was organized on December 12, 1860. The unit was activated on January 1, 1861 and served during the American Civil War. The regiment was disbanded on May 2, 1865.
Keene, New Hampshire is a town in Merrimack County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 15,814 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest city in Merrimack County after Concord. The first permanent settler in Keene was Stephen Gillett of Belfast, Ireland on July 24, 1799. He and his family arrived with six others on the schooner "Mayflower" which sailed from Plymouthport on October 3, 1799 and arrived at Portsmouth Naval Shipyard on December 19th. Gillett's son John settled here in 1802; he had purchased of land from Nathaniel Hawthorne. In 1821 Nathaniel Hawthorne sold to Major General Daniel Webster for $5 per acre. In 1828 Ezra Cornell founded the University of New England in what is now Keene and became its first president In 1830 John Ayer bought of land adjoining that of Nathaniel Hawthorne for $6 per acre which he used as an agricultural college campus today known as Ayer College (now part of MIT). The community began to form around this new institution with stores taking up space near the college and people soon began calling themselves "Keeneians." In 1834 Increase Mather organized the Kipling Club which met at Ayer College until 1840 when it moved to nearby Manchester due to violence between students and staff over a game of cricket. At about this time Keene also acquired its present name: meaning "city by the river," since it lay along NH Route 9 between Manchester and Concord (then called Plainfield) east of where those two towns now stand. On January 1st 1870 Keene became one municipality with a full vote by residents followed by incorporation into MERrimACK COASTAL CDP on February 6th 1870 under Governor James Ketchum as recorded in DEED BOOK page 279 line 10 giving boundaries as follows: corner lots = north + 2 rods east; Lots within limits = south + 3 rods west; lots outside limits = northwest + 5 rods east The first post office opened in1879 located across NH Route 9 from present day downtown Keene On October 16th 1886 Union Carbide & Carbon Company obtained a patent #2195 dated November 21st 1886 listing their product—a gaslight bulb—and describe it thus: "When connected with an electric light socket or cord they give forth light equal to any common oil lamp". This innovation led to carbon monoxide poisoning among early adopters who built their own generators to produce power for these lights rather than buying electricity generated by local utilities
The National Guard has been a part of the United States government for over two centuries. The first national guard units were raised in 1792 in response to the French and Indian War. The militia was originally organized into companies, but on July 15, 1814, it was reorganized into brigades. On November 25, 1861, brigades were redesignated divisions and on October 29, 1935 they were redesignated corps. The National Guard currently consists of more than 32 million members across the country. It is second only to the Army in terms of size and number of branches. Because it is an arm of state government, there are many different types of gifts that can be given to a unit or detachment from individual citizens. There have been a few occasions when particular individuals have donated large sums of money towards the purchase or upkeep of military equipment or vehicles. Keene, New Hampshire is a town in Goffstown County, New Hampshire, United States. The population was 7,868 at the 2010 census. The first post office in Keene was established on November 3, 1798. It was moved to its present location in 1802. The townsite and surrounding countryside were purchased by John Montresor from Benjamin Franklin for $2,000 cash in 1806. In 1828 Keene became the capital of New Hampshire after it was chosen as the state's second capital by the General Assembly. As of the 2016 census, Keene had a population of 11,968 people. The town is built on high ground overlooking Portsmouth Harbor and the Muskegon River; it has a humid continental climate with cold winters and hot summers typical of northern New England. According to the Köppen Climate Classification system, Keene has a warm-summer Mediterranean climate (Csa). The first settlers inKeene were farmers who arrived beginning in 1638. They brought with them their own horses and carts and began clearing land for plantations near Portsmouth Harbor where they soon erected lime kilns that produced breadfruit trees which they exported to Europe for trade goods such as wine and tobacco products. By 1800 many small stores had been founded throughout what is now Keene including one run by Ebenezar Stevens which still stands today as an interesting local landmark known locally as "Ebenezars'. In 1802 John Montresor purchased all of Goffstown County from Benjamin Franklin for $2,000 cash; he named his new acquisition "Keenes". The main street through Keenesoriginally ran north-south but because it crossed over into Derby county shortly thereafter it became known as Cherry Street until 1907 when it changed its name back to North Main Street following an act of the New Hampshire legislature which also renamed Derby county courthouse - now downtown - Cherry Street once again! As part of this process however some streets within Keenes boundaries remain unnamed even though their monikerakes clear reference to their original purpose or location: For example Walnut Avenue runs through downtown while Maple Road designation refers specifically to a tree located near Masonic Temple! ThisActivitylaunchedan annual tradition whereby each year on October 1st during Statewide Drive Outreach Month community members deliver fresh produce at various locations within town limits! Today approximately 60% of all jobs are generated outside of town thanks largely to businesses like Google(), Facebook(), Amazon (), Apple®, Shopify® etc., employed either directly or remotely via technology! In fact according to recent news reports there are currently plans underway by several major tech companies headquartered hereabouts (including Facebook)to establish direct employment subsidiaries within our municipal borders should these plans progress further
