At a time when people in Keene were proud to have a gift for man, the town’s first post office was also its first store. In 1838, Dr. Josiah Baker organized the town and granted it its charter. The first store, built on Meeting Square, was open to the public in 1839. By 1840, there were six stores in Keene and one physician’s office. Keene is a town in New Hampshire, United States. The population was 18,302 at the 2010 census. It is the second-largest town in New Hampshire after Manchester and the largest town on the NH–VT border. The first Europeans to visit Keene were French traders who entered the area in search of fur trading opportunities in 1609. The name Keene likely comes from "kine," meaning deer or antelope, and "eena," meaning meadow or field. In 1734, Nicholas Sparks built a gristmill on what is now Main Street. By 1800, there were fifty-one people living in Keene according to the US Census Bureau. In 1803, John Tryon founded a school in Keene which became known as Tryon Academy. In 1825, George Washington was born here and died here two years later at Mount Vernon plantation near Goffstown; his remains are interred at Mount Vernon National Cemetery outside of New York City.
